Azureus as a group frog or mixed with other species ?

Hey guys first time poster, long time browser. Im starting to get into the hobby
I will defiantly have questions down the road. Ill shoot the first couple now :wink:

I was looking in getting dendrobates azureus WAY down the road when I'm actually ready. I read on other sites and Wikipedia that they do not go well in groups. Just in a pair. Due to them being territorial. However I seen people with pictures of them in a small group of 4 or 5. I'm wondering what are your experiences with this species, and would it be ok to have about 5 of them in a say... 50g viv?

Second question. From my understanding it is a no-no to mix species. Is there any species of darts that go ok together? I would like to have a bit of color variety in the viv.

Hi Adam,

The main issue with adult tincs is going to be same sex aggression. If you want to breed them it will be best to keep pairs. If you have more than one female you will need to keep an eye out for fighting.

Mix tanks are a huge no-no (although some , very few, will tell you it's OK) for anyone without tons and tons of experience. Hundreds of threads on not mixing.

The pictures you have seen of small groups of azureus are most like juveniles that are being raised together until they mature. If you are going to do a group of tincs, most people get the best results purchasing froglets and raising them together.

5 in a 50 is a difficult question to answer (and there are many threads on this topic as well). Consider first that tincs need more floor space than vertical space. Lots of visual barriers (plants, leaf litter, logs, etc.) will allow you more success in keeping a group. With that in mind, give your frogs as much space as possible.

Those are juvis. While not as territorial as adults they can still bully each other. It`s like throwing a random group of people into a cell. Sometimes they`ll get along fine but if food gets lo or space gets small there is much more potential for problems. Just like people some frogs don`t get along.

Ok so i read this off another site and i will not be missing species.
Another question i have is would i be able to mix same species "sexed" males and females with out them fighting? like 6 in a 50g viv?

We prefer to keep our Dart Frogs seperate by genus and morphs. However, questions about mixing or "community tanks" are also one of the more frequently asked questions. It depends on the genus of the Dart Frogs in question. We would recommend understanding which of the sexes are the ones that fight in the species you are considering, and only keep the same sex of the opposite sex. For example auratus, tinctorius, and azureus are all closely related, and the females of each genus will fight, sometimes to the point of the loosing females being killed or dying from stress. If you wanted to keep a group of these animals together you should really only keep males together. Also, this would eliminate any possibility of hybrids being produced - which is highly frowned upon in the community. In general you are far better off avoiding community tanks and sticking to one type of Dart Frog per tank or enclosure.
