Buying Sphagnum cheaper.....Lowes or Home Depot
#1
I searched to see if this info was posted before and didn't see it. Also not sure if this is in the right spot.....You can move it Phil if you need to.

I was in some serious need of more Sphagnum and went to Petsmart and they wanted $14 for a small bale...No way I am paying that.....So I started looking around on line and it was all pretty expensive for what you get, not to mention shipping. So I then did a search at Lowes and HD.....We sure enough they carried it. I went to Lowes the other day after work(across the street from my work) and they had the same size bales that Petsmart had. It is orchid growers choice Sphagnum and is organic blond sphagnum.....How much $ did it cost? $4.75 so I picked up 3 bales and another kind that is organic as well that was double the size for $3.65. I am now set with sphag for a good long while.

I like supporting sponsors, pet shops, on-line retailers but when I can get 3-4 times the amount for the same price I would be fool not to

Good thread. Bulk buys are always good. I'm sure there is some website somewhere where they sell huge bales of spag to the orchid peeps for instance.

I am sure they do at least assume so.....I just couldn't justify killing a $20 on a small bag of Sphagnum.....From what I could find out from the Lowes guy it is something he thought they carry all year round. If wasn't organic or looked like something that had additives I wouldn't of scored it and broke down and got the other stuff....

We all need to save where we can.....

James the wife ordered another 10 kilo bale so if you still need any let me know and I can get you a full box shipped up,. Its seriously not worth buying the 150 gram mini bales at lowes or HD or the petstores.

I have used the Lowe's brand for years with great luck. There are usually a few sticks in a bag to pick out, but that's about it. Given enough light and moisture, it comes back to life pretty good.

The kind that is carried by HD or Lowes is of really low quality. I switched to buying the better stuff here (http://www.calwesttropical.com/index.ph ... agnum-moss).
I use the 190 oz containers with sphagnum as grow out containers. When using the stuff from the home supply stores I had to do sphagum changes often. I noticed that I would often loose froglets when it started to 'darken'. None when I did sphagum changes. When I noticed a friend using the aaa-premium I decided to give it a try. Big difference and worth it. I find there is a big difference in the quality. Why skimp on the materials your frogs are going to be on?
I have noticed a big difference in my plant grow out tanks also. Plants mainly different begonias and Pearcea are healthier and grow faster.
Give the aaa-premium a try, big difference and again why put your frogs on inferior products.
If you can still count the number of frogs you have, you obviously don't have enough.

That is the kind I had before but threw away the package and couldn't find it on any of the hobby sites....I think I got it from Dartfrogmega store and it's out of business.....Thanks for the link.

I have never had an issue with raising froglets on Lowe's brand. I use the clear plastic shoe boxes and have Never lost a single regina or banded imi with using this moss.
