Can I mix different species of Frogs ?

I am making my first viv and I would like to know if I can mix different species of Dart Frogs. I dont really want just one group of the same frog, but I need to know if that is ok or if I really need another tank. also I am really sketchy on this but I love them so much, could I put a red or blue eyed tree frog with them ? Remember please dont judge me on my stupidity, I'm new and still figuering stuff out, thanks a bundle !

The problem with mixing is potential interbreeding, aggression leading to death, and being looked down on by your fellow froggers. We all start out thinking the same way, "I want a tank with all different types of frogs!" until you learn about them...then it all changes.

As Philsuma said, definitely search it up - if not on here, there is bunches on the internet.

Hybridisation and aggression are two of the many problems you can experience when mixing species of frogs together. It is definitely not in the best interests of the animals and their welfare comes before human satisfaction, in this case.

Ok, so i get that every one is against this. BUT, what about the case of red eyes and one species of dart? Having a larger (4x2x4feet) enclosure this should be possible right, being the the enclosure is tall. And, since red eyes stay more up in the trees then the darts do? Or are my facts wrong?

I think one of the issues you would run into is haveing to deal with the crickets for the red eyes. They could stress out and bite the darts crawling all around the viv.

I have looked this up some time ago, normally frogs can be mixed and matched but the general rule is the bigger the tank the higher success rate in the mixing. If you mix the frogs they will most likely establish colonies and territories were if another frog crosses over it is immediately engaged in a wrestling match after a few warnings. You can see why the bigger the tank is the better, their are a few species that should not be mixed however I forget their names. :wink:

This is probably one of the most asked, and thus written about , subject on the dart forums. A simple and quick search will tell you that that vast, vast majority of Dart froggers do not condone mixing of any species of frogs. For many reasons. Got to be at least thousand post explaining exactly why.

it was about making a waterfall / river / pool system, but no matter, I got the answers and its all good.

Most of them can go to saurian.com. I may have spelled it wrong, lol. Space is the biggest issue - they need lots of space.

Mixing...don't do it. If you do it and have frogs die...it will be your own fault because you have been warned.

So don't mix species of frogs because of troubles of frogs kicking each others butt or just breeding purposes? Just wondering because, what happens if i get a tank full of females/males so that way breeding wouldn't be a problem. Could I still do it?

Mixed species Vivariums - Dart Frogs...

and "Multi Species" Vivariums - Frog and Anoles for instance...

Are BOTH able to be achieived with decent sucess rates for the Hobbyist that has high levels of EXPERIENCE and has worked with many other single species vivariums from some of the representative species before attempting this.

The REASON that many older, experienced forums members discourage this Hobby facet is that 95% of all threads started and questions asked about this subject, are from younger people, some as young as 15 years of age, who seriously lack even the basics of single species care.

Of course we all know it's been done in Europe for decades and "Zoos do it" but that does not mean we should celebrate it, cater to it and "say no harsh things" to every new person who announces a sudden urge to place a bunch or animals together.

There is still every good reason in the world to -"Say No to Some People", occasionally.

Well....I got a couple PM's over this statement apparently. A few "boos from the gallery", as it were.

I don't know how else to explain this, but I'm not 100% against mixing species or animals.

You can go back 5 or so years on DB and find my posts where I defend the ability to construct a Vivarium with anolis and frogs.

As long as there are threads started by 16 year olds wanting to try it....I'm not going to be one of those people pandering to the "let them do it - they're gonna do it anyway" crowd. I respect myself and my animals too much to lower myself to that.

So if we lost a couple members because somehow, "I'm too mean to the new guys"...there ya have it. :roll:
