Checkin' the Viv at night
#1
One of the things I like to occasionally do, is to put on the ole' headlamp and journey downstairs to peep the frog room late at night, when things are dark and everybody's sleepin' .

With a bright light and a dark background (no other lights), you will be amazed at all the stuff you see:

1. All the fav sleeping spots of the frogs.

2. Plant eating - snails and slugs. Now you 'll know who is to blame for that chewed up selagenela !

3. EGGS. This is a big one, folks, I see so much more egg and egg laying evidence at night. The eggs are so shiny, that they stick out like a neon sign at night, under bright concentrated lamp light.

4. Tads in broms. This one is a little harder. Tads are pretty skittish and dive quickly when woken up, but it is possible.

oh...and I lied in the first sentence above. I don't check the frog room at night occasionally. I do it much more often than occasionally. Heh

Its pretty cool how each one "claims" their own sleeping spot. I check em out too frequently before bed.

what time do you define as "night"? my leuc usually starts to climb his tree 2 hours before sunset. when he actually goes to sleep is beyond me though. i assume he's asleep once hes on the leaves so i stop disturbing him then

Dart Frog sleeping habits are a tough one...for different species, ages ect. When they climb like that in the evening, you can probably bet they are bedding down.

I just wanted to share my experience with using a light to look around the vivarium when it's really dark in the room and the only light is from your lamp...or as you guys say....torch.

LOL torch. i personally just turn on the light. mine sleeps in the back corner every single night. sometimes he climbs up and sleeps on the lid which is a pain in the morning trying to get him off.
sometimes there are odd pin head crickets running around on the bottom which i try to kill (i dont want them to grow in there). i leave FF though

Hey Stu,

I wouldn't worry about stressing the frogs. PDF's sleep like rocks! I do all the egg pulling at night. I pulled some eggs once to show a newer frogger and the Alanis female jumped on my hand and stared me down. I haven't done it since. haha

I went to a small local "Ranario" or Frog Farm in Southeastern C.R and one of the guides / caretakers told me not to use my flash to photograph the frogs as it will make their eyes "crazy" and kill them. Too funny.

10 mins later a 4.7 quake hit and shook the place so hard that the tadpole exhibit water almost sloshed over the edge of the aquarium. Loved it.
