Couple of Questions
#1
Hello all, I'm an Avid Fishkeeping and Birdkeeper, and after my 10 gallon fishtank's use is done, I'd like to make it a Poison Dart Frog Vivarium. My questions are, is only having 1 OK? All the websites I've read have never said 1 wasn't OK, but they always refer to stocking in pairs. And also, what plants would be acceptable for this sized vivarium? I like Dendrobates auratus and Dendrobates leucomelas, I assume these are OK? Thanks for any responses.

Welcome,

A 10 gallon aquarium is pretty commonly used as a vivarium (enclosure) by most new hobbyists as it is so easy to find -everyone has one.

That said, "10 gallons" is a little on the smaller side for most frogs. People usually do keep more than one, but that is only personal preference. Frogs do not need company or even a mate. They will do just fine by themselves. They don't "pine away" for other frogs.

1 single frog will be fine in a 10 gallon fish tank and both species that you mentioned are excellent choices for a new hobbyist.

Thank you Smile I realized this is probably not possible, but I believe there is something called a Dwarf Orchid, would this outgrown a 10 gallon or would It be ok?

I'm not a big orchid guy....but most orchids need more air cirulation than what our hobby enclosures normally provide. They are somewhat of an advanced planting option overall. I would look into "jewel" Orchids - they seem to do better than most.

and remember.....it often doesn't matter if something grows a litte large. That's what shears are for !

Lol, scissors are a very handy tool Big Grin I'll look into Jewel Orchids, what are other good plants? I was going to do fish gravel( getting new after it's fish use), some moss( pillow?), driftwood/wood, and the rest being plants. Does this sound good? And could I use a Heating Pad?

Take a look around the forum for threads on those issues.....the beginner plant list is in that subforum and substrate threads are there as well.

Feel free to either tack your questions onto an existing thread with a similar or same issue - no worries there. Sometimes it's easier that way as well. If you can't find anything close....go ahead a start a whole new thread. No problemo either way.
