El Dorado tad
#1
Ok Phil, here he is! Our F2 El Dorado

This one is deposited in a white film can. I can see him swimming around. Hard to get a good pic, so, I held a pen light up to the canister to get his shadow.

They also have tads in a couple broms and I think one or two of the black cans. Today they laid another clutch. First one in a while.

Oh that is so cool !!

F2 ! Very nice Kris.

I just did a thread on film cans. One of these days, we should try for a pumilio thread with regards to broms vs cans and their preference.

Thanks guys! I really hope this little one makes it. While I haven't seen him being fed, he's growing fast. I think they get up a lot earlier than I do :p

I think they eat some dead FF's and biofilm as well as the occasional non fertized egg....not sure on how much though.

Ok here is a really bad video of the tad in the can. He would only react when the light came on, so, I had to turn it off and on. Also had to hold the camera at an awkward angle. Oh and the freak out about 3/4 of the way in is when I heard rustling and had to emergency check the door for the parents. Otherwise it's great! lol.

Ok about 40 seconds in, do you see legs? (may be more like 37 seconds in, something like that)

Yay! Maybe that's why the parents have started laying new clutches. Last batch have legs and don't need eggs. I wonder if/how many siblings are hidden away.

I have a question about water.

The water level in the canister has gotten pretty high, with misting and what not. With tads raised by hand, people note that they lower the water when the legs come out. Is this something I should do with this tad? Should I lower the water a bit or leave it high?

I would lower the water and make sure the canister is always tilted at an angle so it can crawl out

Uh oh...

I went into the tank to lower the water a little and tilt the canister. The canister came loose in my hand. So, While I had it in hand, I decided to take a good look at the little fella. I think he has SLS Sad

His back legs look good but his front legs are tiny. Maybe (fingers crossed) they will grow in.

The canister was way up at the top of his 20H vert. Instead of putting it back up there, I placed it closer to the ground, thinking that if he does have SLS, and he's able to make his way out of the canister, it's a long drop from the top to the bottom. Is it ok to move their canister at this point?

I did take some pictures and hopefully one or two will be clear enough for you guys to check out the front legs. Will post them when I get home from work tonight.

Ok here are some pics. I can get more if these aren't good. Some pics his front legs look ok and others they look really wimpy. It looks like he still has a lot of tail, so, maybe his front arms are just recently out and will beef up a bit.

I vote....NOT SLS !

Very preliminary, of course.....but I've seen a lot worse.

What a nice looking colour and pattern too. Eldorados throw some variable markings. I have 2 groups of 1.2 and 1.1 and even the "solid or reticulated morphs" will throw a speckled pattern every now and again. Pretty neat.

Fingers crossed, Kris.

Yay! Thanks Phil! Is it ok to leave him down near the bottom of the tank or should I put him back where he was (where I can't spy on him)?

I would suction cup it back up somewhere close to the bottom. Just be sure it's at an angle and low enough water so it won't drown.

Today I got to watch the female feeding babies in a brom and the male picking up newly hatched tads. Unfortunately, I looked away for just a moment and dad and tads where gone. :?

I love these frogs Big Grin
