Establishing "Frog Credibility" in the Dart Frog Hobby
#1
Some possible ideas for establishing “Frog Credibility” in today’s current Herp Hobby Industry:

1.Viv design Credibility
New product design as well as modifications to improve existing ideas as well, or just build an awesome vivarium and take a bunch of pictures of it.

2.Breeding Credibility
Good husbandry Credibility, naturally has to precede breeding. It doesn't mean you have to breed anything rare - just to be able to say you have surmounted the breeding and raising of offspring is a huge hobby kudos. Quickest way to not be labeled a flipper - breed something !

3.Computer Credibility
Establish a flattering and credible online presence. Design and maintain, or just participate, in a hobby website or list serve / Forum. Could be as simple as making a nice Avatar and online signature and then posting often on a forum. If you are reading this, then you are 1/2 way there already. Post up !

4.Photography Credibility
Take some pics. They don't have to be spectacular or award winning. Everyone appreciates some nice pics. Always.Even cell phones take very good pics these days. This one is easy, folks.

5.Country of species origin / Trip Credibility
Panama, Peru (Amazon) and Costa Rica. This one is a little out of reach for a lot of hobbyists (time and $$) but is often considered the "holy grail" of hobby cred - going overseas to observe the animals in situ.

6.Academic or Literary Credibility
Papers or Articles published or peer reviewed.
Comprehensive Book and Magazine Collection owned.
B.S or M.S in Herpetology , biology or Conservation.

7. Referral Credibility
Cultivate a feedback thread where your customers are encouraged to honestly report all your good transactions.

as always.....just some thoughts and content....

I feel there needs to be an addition of breeders/hobbiests that sell frogs fecal regularly and be sure to encourage the buyer to fecal as well.
Plus making sure the buyer has enough experience to take care of the frogs. I am paticular who I sell my frogs to, no flippers or mixers.

Only in certain circles...
Do you know where your frogs have been?

In all cases....you want to portray yourself as a real, live, caring human and not just someone posting ads for sale ect.

You don't have to post 100% threads on husbandry or something spectacular....just be real and post what you know. The rest will take care of itself and people will start to like you.

Are these guidelines directed more toward those who want to breed and sell their frogs? I can't imagine a casual hobbyist with a bunch of kids n critters trying to accomplish all of the above. Not everyone who has frogs wants the responsibility of breeding and selling the offspring. As frog vendors, I can imagine that y'all wouldn't want the casual hobbyist to try to dilute the hobby with their offspring.

IMO, I LOVE seeing the egg to tad to froglet process. It's a learning experience each and every time. But, I'm not trying to make a living at it and I don't really have the time to make a website showing their progress. I'm pretty particular about who I'm selling my frogs to as well. For me, it's just a hobby - that's all. The only thing I would tell new hobbyists is that if they consider the 'm' word, it's a lot like putting a bunch of male betas in the same tank. I think they'll get the hint - otherwise, I'd drop it.

My post is just thought provoking content...it's not guidelines....it's not gospel....it's not a breeders union code.

It's only a post designed to engender thought and discussion.

Had a talk with a couple buddies , last few days, and they are of the mind that some people are literally scared to post pics because they "do not want other people to know exactly what they have".

Gotta think about this one for a while. I know we all have the "frog thief" scare, and burglaries are a real threat these days, but man, the hobby is so watered down if you can't directly share it with people and make NEW friends.

Sobering thoughts... Sad

I like the concept and, like many other aspects of life, it takes time and communication to develop trust and the associated credibility. It can feel kind of risky revealing too much about yourself to a group of folks you've never met in person and might never have even spoken to on the phone. It sure has helped me to attend frog meets and shows and have made some good friends in the hobby. It's more difficult to establish this kind of community that allows people to establish mutual trust and respect on the internet, but if it's combined with meeting folks in person once in a while, it works like any other relationships. You learn who really knows what they're talking about, whether they're in the hobby for love of the frogs, or strictly business, who is generous and who will nickel and dime you to death. It just takes a willingness to make the effort to let people know what frogs you're working with, posting photos of frogs and vivs (as you pointed out Phil), so people know that you don't operate the frog equivalent of a puppy mill, and treat people right during transactions. There are folks that I would never buy from again just because of shoddy packing jobs. There are others who have taken as much care in packing iso and spring cultures as most people take in packing frogs. I go back to those folks time and again. I get the impression that a lot of people want to jump into the hobby and make people think they know more than they really do and that they've been doing this for a lot longer. I had only one pair of azureus for five years before I started expanding my collection about 18 months ago, so I still consider myself somewhat of a novice and don't mind telling people that. I learn more that way.

The reverse hold true as well, IMO. People that don't post pics can also be thought of, as people that have dirty vivs, vivs that are too small or crowded or perhaps no vivs at all (posers). It is a two way street. To NOT post pics of your vivs and animals leads some people to think many negative things. That's the way I always saw it, anyway. As soon as I bought a nice DSLR cam, I wanted to get some viv, frog and frog room pics so people knew I was serious about my involvement in the hobby.

Ummm, so don't take shots of what you don't want to advertise?? Also, when taking pics and posting on-line, my home address and phone number isn't attached. I don't want to live in a bubble and worry about what could happen.

Being open and honest, making new friends, mingling with fellow PDF enthusiasts outweighs any risk IMO. To each his own I guess...Their loss.
