Minimum Shipping Temperature of 40F
#1
Having just got back from Sean Stewart's facility and a jam-packed visit with much discussion.....

We agreed that a Minimum local temp of 40 fahrenheit, all around, not just a "high", as well as minimum 40F temps at all transit stops for the shipped box, was a very decent, attainable hobby standard that we wish more hobbyists would go by. There were stories of injuries and losses attributed to lower temps, that I have no doubt could have been avoided.

I wholeheartedly back this temperature minimum and hope that a shipping standard with that in mind, can someday be adopted by the hobby or at least a concerned breeders segment.

The only issue I see are that some places hit the 40's at night until near summer. And that said people usually pack much more responsibly for cold than for heat. The temp issues with heat are what I see more threatening as frogs can survive 40 degrees pretty easily for a short period.

^^ No doubt. We didn't touch on a "Maximum" temperature, or "Too Hot" but yes, that needs tackled as well.

Being Ive been shipping all types of herps for more than ten years I just see the heat as more of a threat. Cold packs thaw much easier than heat packs go bad. But yes there should be a set standard. I myself plan to stopshipping and do shows. Im just not into the stress of fed ex or anyone killing my herps in transit. I lost quite a few retics to shipping issues last year and there is a kahl line snow boa out there somewhere that vanished on me a few years back.

I agree with Michael, most issues I have had and my greatest concern is heat. I have the Midwestern weather shift, and frog shipments arrive at around low 30's instead of the low 40's that were predicted. They arrived fine, and I have shipped in similar situations without issue. The heat is a bigger devil.

Heat may indeed be a bigger problem, but we can start a seperate thread on heat. Lets keep this particular discussion focused on the lower temperature range.

And again, I hope it doesn't seem dogmatic, but we have got to start somewhere with a "shipping standard".

That's where a breeders group can make a lot of headway - on issues like shipping temps.

I agree we need a standard of shipping. But I think maybe it should be more on the quality of packing. We as hobbyists are stretched out all over the country in different regions making it so that some of us have way shorter seasons that would fit the bill for a temp mandate.
Its been in the 70's here for a month now and all whom I have shipped bugs or broms to up north have been as cold as 5 degree's, by time they hit their spring time temps we are in the 90's.

My concern is shipping from warm to cold. In Texas and we are hitting 70's and the individuals I am shipping to are in the 40-50 range.

Interior box temperatures of 60F seem ok to me. Is there anyone that feels inside box temps in the low sixties are too low and would damage the frogs?
