Need a Vet Seattle area
#1
I'm looking for a Seattle area herp vet, if any Puget Sound froggers are reading. I am doing my homework, and after calling all over the place to see if anyone does fecals, or deals in herps, I got the cold shoulder. I know there has to be 1 or 2 here, but I found one that won't do fecals without an office visit. They want to see the patient but fecals are included in the exam. Not sure whythat is, if there was problems they would be my first call once I know they are there. I asked them about just charging me for parasite checks and charging me for meds to clean it up, but not without an exam. I 'spose I might have to bite the bullet when the time comes. If exam visits could be avoided, including follow up visits for treatment that would be great.

All this, and explaining I don't even have the animals yet, just looking for a vet. I can only imagine how tough it is for someone in sparsley populated areas. Confusedhock:

Most Vets will want to see the frog before doing a fecal.
Try Dr. Frye, I have used him for my fecals and he is great to work with.

First Sticky after you click above ^^^

A "Sticky" is a thread that is always "on top" of the list of many threads and has a push pin icon on the side of it - blue or sometimes red.

Looks like a pin though....

I checked the ones on the link in the sticky, but a few of them no longer do exotics. Just the one I mentioned above does. If I can find a froggy club in the area I'm sure they will know where to go.

Really ?

They are all ARAV listed Vets.....undergoing annual training for Reptile and Amphibian specialties and some "Don't Do Exotics" ?

Wow...how weird...

The reason most ethical vets want to see the frog first before prescribing treatment, is to be able to see the condition of the animal. It has been proven on numerous occassions that frogs can live long and happy lives with surprisingly heavy parasite loads, and it is virtually impossible and not really desirable to have a frog that is "100% clean"

I would personally recommend that instead of ordering medicines and treatments online, you go to the Association of Amphibian and Reptile Vets website and see if there is a member in your area who is up on the latest veterinary information and adheres to their ethical standards.

Confusedhock: I'm with you Phil. The way some proponants advertise for only the use of ARAV vets and their "latest veterinary information" on all things dart frogs  ...it's got to be wrong that they don't all work on darts and have actual dart frog experience...how could that be? Confusedhock:

I'd like to know how many froggers have looked up ARAV vets only to be told they don't work on (nor do they have any "latest veterinary information") actual on dart frogs. I've read more than once that many listed won't touch a dart, much less do they have any expereince (schooling, actual or otherwise) with darts...

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

I'll insert a shameless plug for Rich's brother Dr. David Frye, he is able to do consultations via email to dr.frye.dvm@sbcglobal.net, check fecal samples and provide appropriate medications.

I've had a Vet in the Central Pa area that was ARAV and advertised for "Exotics" only to say to me "We don't work with Dart Frogs - Try another vet in the bla bla area".....

Not all ARAV members work with darts, however the ones that do like Kevin Wright DVM are extremely knowledgable with years of experience and access to a large shared brain trust of other like minded professionals. Again there is a reason vets don't like to prescibe meds sight unseen. To put it simplisticly how would any of you feel if your personal doctor didn't feel the need to see, instead just asking you to decribe the problem and provide a stool sample?

Like in most arguments.....there has to be a middle ground here, with respect to "Helpful Vets and the Dart Frog Hobby".

I am a BIG fan of "Options".

I like having the ability to circumvent a particular Vet in a geographic area that is either "unhelpful" or cost prohibitive. You must admit, when a particular person realizes that they are the only "horse in a one-horse town" their rates.....tend to go up, shall we say.

What I Dislike....is a brand new person being herded towards a certain medical issue (and prophylactic treatments) unless there is an out-and-out emergency.

Options are always good as well as transparency and ability to modify treatment based on more recent information as oppossed to prescribing treatments frozen in time from ten years ago. Speaking of progress and learning, has there been any word on the "Panacur study" that was touted with such fanfare a few months back by a certain individul who occassionally frequents this forum?

Hey Roman, If you are asking about scientific research being done on Panacur , and how I relate to it, info on the study has been posted and is up to date.

Why? Wouldn't it be more beneficial for everyone to see the results of the study, methodology used and contributing individuals? How would making each one of us go on a scavenger hunt for the information be of benefit to this board or its members?

Study results will be made public immediately after it's conclusion .
No need for blow by blow. All else has been posted and is just adding to a hi-jack.

Didn't mean to start a whole thing with my post haha.. I think the vets that they listed on the list are no longer with those animal hospitals. I suppose i should have thrown in that little tidbit. Sorry.

I may have worded what I meant wrong. I have no trouble paying the vet to treat them, but if I buy animals that are not all loaded upwith bugs from a decent breeder then there may be no need to treat them. I just wanted to see about fecals so I know or not I dont want to contaminate the viv with a bunch of parasites if I can keep it to a minimum level. I won't buy anything online and treat them, I was just looking at the front end while they are in quarantine and preparing for that. I dont have any animals yet i am making preparations is all Smile
