Vivarium Lighting - LED light quality
#1
I have been using LED lights for approx. 6 weeks on my frog vivs. I have commented in other posts about the benefits of lower energy consumption, potential longevity and minimum heat output. This thread is intended to share experiences with LED products currently available for viv use.

I have attached photos showing before and after - The brom in the photo is a Neo Zoe I picked up at Home Depot. You can see it had very little red upon purchase. After 1 1/2 months, new growth is showing a beautiful color up. The light unit is an LED 12watt screw-in style from Todd at LightYourReptiles.com - I dont know if anyone else carries this product. Cost was $28. I took some risk and bought 4 units. Todd did the hard work of finding a product that had excellent lumen per $$, but the product was so new, he did not have any promise they could color up a brom, although we had no reason to believe the new LED light was not up to the job.

The photos have dates - as they say, "the proof is in the pudding." I conclude the hobby has a great alternative over the traditional lighting sources that can handle plants w a higher light requirement. The only outstanding question in my mind is the longevity.

I dont want to limit this thread to just this particular product. Please share experiences with other LED units.

Regards
Scott

using digital temp gun - @ top vent approx 85F - (w hood in place) aiming temp gun at air under the hood was 89-91F - I have 1" spacer (pvc coupler) on the feet of the ExoTerra base to allow for airflow

Hi Scott,
I am glad you like!
And your right, I tested quite a few "duds" before settling on these beauties. Big Grin

Phil,
Yes they are self contained -- NO extra ballast or transformer needed, its all inside of the unit.
Just screw them in!
No need to buy a new pricey fixture.
