Auratus Import Quota's...why?
#1
Im wondering how many auratus have come into the US in the last couple years and as our hobby is at its biggest with more new hobbyists why hasnt the need for the imports been cured? hundreds of new hobbyists+ auratus= lots of cb frogs which= unneeded imports.

I cant help but think if we managed whats here better and didnt keep raping the wild of common frogs perhaps we could get a new nicer or new ones in every once in a while with less issue.

Here's the Data I have, Mike.

Bear in mind that I did my best to obtain it from a reputable source(I would'nt have retained it otherwise) BUT I can't remember where or when I copied it.

So....I would use this data as a good "first start" in your quest for auratus numbers. Useful still !

D. auratus U.S Imports

Year 2000: 2099

Year 2001: 505

Year 2002: 3834

Year 2003: 4556

Year 2004: 6283

Year 2005: 8442

Year 2006: 8184

Year 2007: 7353

Year 2008: 8730

Also...as Ed would say....not sure if that number represents "Live" animals only.

Either way, unlike R. reticulatus....THAT'S a lot of frogs above !

2 Theories:

1. They came in as "filler" frogs for other animal shipments because they were easier to catch than say, pumilio. Hence the greater numbers.

2. They were so low priced that most were sent to "pet stores" and not the hobby, where most died in the store or going to the wrong people - impulse buys.

Is that where Ive heard this? I need to quit reading the posts of those I dislike. Still though for the most common dart in the hobby and one of the most popular and best beginner darts you would think we would have killed any need for them. Not to say new blood now and then wouldn't be good.
I know the filler issues and theyou have to buy these to get those but I dont see it being more than a time or two of the collectors being left with the frogs and no pay before they quit collecting them and only grabbed up what is needed. There may even be more money in it...who knows. We need to do something. If we cant put a stop to the need of imported auratus we wont fix anything.

It reminds me of all the bags and toats of tigerrats, vine snakes, and wc anaconda at a few shops in FL. Why are we still bringing this stuff in?
