yeah its tricky Dani, we are still on our first cuture of hydei, but we lost our mels,to mites twice,we got the hydie though by,dusting the flies and then seiving them whist tapping, the mites drop off with the dust. That first culture of hydie is still the strain we have running now nearly 2 yrs on.We have alot on the go at presant,so builbing up numbers again, lot of potential youngsters to feed,if we can help in a couple of weeks i'll get back, have you got problems with all your flies, what are you running?
Dani Because we buy in so little i haven't used many folks, could you give me an email address for you i might have a mate up north who could help we got our strain of mel from him,you could also try Shelly...i think "feast for frogs" is her site, maybe berksmike could help too on reptileforums.co.uk. try dusting them first you might win and let us know how ya get on...do you have frogs yet?

Try here : http://mad4frogs.webs.com/

Shelley is a top livefood breeder, if you drop her a mail she should be able to help out. As for rearing containers use a plastic pint glass, for the lid try using a piece of the very cheap dish cloths (in sure you know them they are blue & white). I personally use the other halfs old stockings but you do run the risk of wild fruit flys contaminating your culture this way as the wild ones can lay eggs on the top of your culture & their eggs can drop through. I wouldnt worry about using the specialist lids to be honest. If you've got any other Q's let me know

thanks for the link bro,and agreed use the cheep ones...not the brand name!! holes are too big,Dani get them from a superstore begining with T and their own elcheepo brand...shoud add if your maggots are cralwing the sides trying to get out,you probably have ventilation problems

thanks all for your help!!
i wouldn't even think about getting my frogs till i get this culturing down a bit better, there's no local store stocking ff or even the microdot crickets on a regular basis so until i can guarantee as far as possible a good solid supply of ff im not gonna source my frogs, i'm currently culturing Drosophila melanogaster, and as far as i can see there's mites in everyone i have a product called MITE OFF by zoo med i was going to use but it said unsuitable for amphibians or aracnids?? so im guessing it wouldn't be any good using it on there food either?
i know the kind of cloths your on about so ill give that a try next time with the pint glasses too,
with regards dusting them im assuming you mean with the mineral powder id be using to dust with when feeding

Don't use that mite off stuff, I believe its for mites that live on reptiles & will kill off the whole culture, I'm pretty sure would also kill your frogs if they came into contact with it.

i don't know about the mite off product Dani,Ben might though. But i will say be very careful what you use, these frogs have such sensitive skins....you can use mite paper under your cultures,i don't but i know others do,the Q about do you have frogs, was to get a picture of how quick you need flies...whether we needed to jump about and make it happen  Dani we used nutrabal,we hadn't yet sourced repashy, use repashy for daily dusting its the best, here,of course you might want to ring the changes,i know lots of guys that do,i'm only a novice,so read up and ask the guys here for other opinions.
tip out your flies,we use a big container first then into a pint pot or similar
add some vit dusting powder
swirl around so the flies are covered...as per feeding
now tip them into a small mesh seive that the flies wont go through and the mites will keep tapping it...you'll have a laugh here...tip the cleaned flies into a new culture, keep these new cultures separate to the old mite ones, you wont crack it straight away but it can work sometimes,as above we lost the mels but won with the hydie, regards

Thanks for helping out guys...I am very fond of the local-to-local contacts and help. Things tend to get resolved a bit quicker when locals help each other out, over your way or over here as well.

I made this thread "U.K Froggers Here" an "announcement" which sets it on top of all the other threads. Makes it easier to find but also as a thank you and to give you guys a small slice of your own area here. You've been helpful and numerous and I thank you.

Feel free to post and talk about anything you want here on this / your thread. It's 100% anything you wish to discuss.

seiving the flies sounds like it could be fun especialy after i had plenty escape whilst making my first cultures and the other half wasnt best pleased when she found two doing the back stroke in her drink Wink

all things repashy are now here in good ol blighty www.repashy.co.uk,Allen also makes a fly media,we ring the changes often using our normal very simple reciepe to culture the flies readybreak, honey water, and then some go on the repashy superfly before feeding, readybreak has lots of vits as its for kids and we seemed to get similar results using the superfly numbers wise,so all about varied nutrition for us,

tis a work in progress Dani, its a matter of reducing them bit by bit.Mate do you have some dwarf white woodlice we call em the US call them iso,if not get some in they are slow to get going, but pretty easy to work wit, they just take time, keep them warm mate, ours live on top of one of our racks,so as hot as our room gets, kept in 3L tubs from morrisons, with a small vent around an inch, covered in that same elcheepo cloth we mentioned earlier

ha they are multi talented Dani...ie both, there are other options,my room thread shows pretty much how we culture and a bit of a dodge with our natives while your cultures are building. You can also seed a viv with giant orange adults, they are too big for the darts but they will act as clean up and the offspring as food we also use a fast moving grey from peru i think,we fed a mix of tetramin and readybreak, but the use of edible subs makes life real easy as there is always some grub if they run out.see Phils excellant thread also on iso culturing, the card is genius

As Stu said its good to have some sort of back up, I keep 6 cultures of dwarf woodlice ready for when they're needed. Also have cultures of bean weevils, grain weevils & confused flour beetles as well as lesser waxmoth & Indian meal moths. I also have a couple of different species of springtails (a new one coming tomorrow can't wait to see how they turn out:-))

basically I try to keep my options as open as possible, a lot of what I culture I use for my reps as well. my advice would be to culture as much as you feel comfortable with & give your animals as much variety as you can, fruit flys are the basic food source but I feel that you do need to supplement with other things to keep things interesting & to provide a good range of nutrients.

Really got my fingers crossed for you Stu, it'll be unbelievable if you pull it off but if anyone can its you chap. I kind of expected this, give them all the different food you can buddy - I KNOW you can do this, you have all the bases covered, just keep at it chap.

I have no idea what the springs are, my mate cam has 2 vivs full of them for his mantids, he doesn't breed them but has managed to culture thousands of the buggers by accident, going to get a few hundred tomorrow I hope, will let everyone know what they're all about once I get a go with them. What I do know is that they aren't already cultured as he won't have been near any springs

Speak soon buddy

New springtails are here, they are very, very small. Less than half the size of the small white that ee are used to I would hazard a guess at them being less than 1mm in length. Going to keep them at room temp & fairly dry on the surface I should know whether I have a viable culture in less than a month or so, will keep you all updated
