I do not have any frogs yet, but I'm trying to line up all the things that people talk about needing to be done first- like fecal exams. I sent an email to Dr. Frye but have not heard anything back. Is that all I need to do - wait for him and he will give in structions on how to obtain samples, when to obtain them, how often, shipping samples out, ect ? Is there any where else that they can be done? Thanks for the help can't wait to get some PDF's but sure as Hell don't want to lose my first Dart Frogs.

Thanks !
Did my brother get back to you? He answers all emails he gets so if not, re-send it becasue it may have went to spam.

Rich
Yes, thank you very much.
Anywhere else to send in fecals? Someone mentioned a university that does them... Anyone know which?
The University of Georgia Vet Diagnostic Lab will do them but will be as much or more than Dr. Frye.
Here's another option....

Dr Kevin Wright in Arizona. I'm a big fan of trying to do just about everything "close to home" and since your in Texas, this may be a good deal.

He charges $42 per fecal exam... Confusedhock:
If something positive is found he cannot treat either, the same with Univ. of GA.
I have used Dr. Frye for lots of fecals, he is great to work with.
Here is a link with a little of Dr Fryes background and contact information http://fryebrothersfrogs.com/drfrye.html
I've already sent Dr. Frye an email. Just waiting for a reply.

Got this from the ARAV site
Most veterinarians will insist on you paying an 'office visit' to perform a fecal exam. The cost of an office visit could be as much as 50.00 and then add the cost of a fecal and you are looking at some big money to test one frog.

Rich's brother Dr. David Frye in MI only needs the fecal collected and sent it via mail. Saves a lot of money.
i called a local exotics vet, and they wanted $85 per frog exam then addition costs for fecals. i almost fell over. i want to do the right thing, but wow this frog hobby is getting expensive. i feel that i do want healthy forts, and i'm trying to do it right, for the frogs sake, and who knows if i have tadpoles and froglets, i want to go into it with a good head start. i am sending out fecals tomorrow. i wish there were more like Dr Frye, b/c i hate to overwhelm him with even more decals to check. i know he does not make any profit helping us all. if my frogs do become seemingly ill, i will of course go to the vet.
Are you sending them to Dr. Frye?
I have sent fecals to him for 7 years, he's great.
yes. I have to run it to the post office as soon as they open.
i got a call from Dr Frye's office. i sent my samples but there was just a bit too much water in the containers, so i need to re-send my samples. ugh. I guess another week until i can send it second day again. i don't even have any fecals from this morning.
Relax, Colleen, and hang in there! You are obviously getting stressed, how about the frogs? Are they doing OK? Please go back and look at Jim's recent QT links (Jim from Austin), his female wasn't doing well in QT and he had to take her out early. She is much better now, after the fact. I just don't want you to get so obsessed with QT, and other trivia/timetables, that you aren't watching the frogs!
Good luck!!!

When sending fecals you need at least 2 weeks of fecal (poop) the more the better, I would keep them in QT and wait a couple weeks and collect more fecals. As long as there is adequate space, leaf litter and pothos should be fine in QT.
I have had frogs in QT for months. Have even had breeding in QT, just monitor them and make sure they are eating, low light helps as well as Dixie cups and hides.
thanks. i'm not really stressed about it, and i do spend time with them, watching them. just not a patient person and can't wait to be able to watch them up here in the computer area, where i am here for much of my day. they look healthy and fat, and i'm actually thinking that i might have 2 females instead of a pair. the supposed male has wide fingertips, but other than that, is similar size to the female, similar shape, and similar body type. and i have not witnessed him calling. i'm a bit bummed out about this, but if the females can coexist peacefully, that is fine with me. i guess i have to wait and find out.
Toe pads can be a confusing indicator:

If you post some profile shots folks can chime in with opinions. That helps pass the QT time too Smile
