Guys, any tips on what lenses for dart photos to go with a canon 550,and any other tips (maybe this should be in beginners question, sorry making life difficult :oops There are some absolutely wonderful pics here so any tips on getting them eg white balance - anything really.

Photography is not my personal forte'. Even though I have a DSLR ,I often use the easiest, automatic settings.

My theory ? Take 500 shots and a couple of them are bound to be "keepers"..lol

Ask at your local camera shop if there are any photography clubs and classes.

A macro lens was my best investment...Here is a picture from my 90mm marco lens

With Canon you have four choices (basic, at least) for macro lenses.
50mm Macro 2.5 for any Canon, not 'true 1:1 macro' -----about $300
60mm-s 2.8, for 1.6 crop factor cameras, which yours is-------about $500
and for any Canon camera, the 100mm L IS 2.8 --about$1100, or cheaper , by half 100mm non-L IS 2.8

Most go with the $600 100mm 2.8 non L IS

I use AV mode which lets me choose ISO and aperature and the camera calculates shutter spead and always calculates white balance, no matter what mode on my camera. my 'real ' photography buddies tell me I need to shoot everything on a tripod with a remote shutter release. Just got my pod yesterday.

But , I've only been messing around with DSLRs for about 6 months and I have no clue what I am doing yet. Phil's method worked for me , up until I submersed my old Nikon ($800 at the time of purchase, so it was not a cheap P+S) P+S in water and killed it. 500 pics, one good shot...

...and , after looking up a '550' it seems you have a point and shoot (?), not a DSLR, which does not allow for lens exchanging. A DSLR will. You can find some pretty freakin' good P+Ss out there with a macro mode (Nikon Coolpix 5400 comes to mind...), yours may be one. With P+Ss you let the camera calculate everything and you also get to go through those 500 pics and keep one you like.

Thanks Chris,great shot,though the investment will have to wait for a while,while we build this room and stock it,nice to know what I should be investing in in the future,will keep an eye out,though for a bargain!!

Rich i'll pop both your answers together to say thanks for laying it all out for me ...very generous,and greatly appreciated.Yes it is a DSLR confusion may be arising because we are in England. I might be wrong, but i believe the American version is the T2i rebel,i can definately change lenses,this was one of the reasons I bought this bit of kit,as this camera is capable of utilising EOS lenses,of which there are many,as you know
