Why is the national zoo in the Dominican Republic so heavily protected with armed guards and security? I recently came back from a visit to the DR. I understand there is a security presence in most places in the country. However, the zoo was more than any other places I visited. There was a security search upon entering and throughout the zoo they were patrolling with many guns. I almost felt like I was on some sort of military base because of the heavy presence.
