After sending a PM it seems to be moved to the outbox and just stays there. Does the system show it in the outbox until it has been read or am I doing something wrong?

Yes it stays in the outbox until it is read.

^^ Correct. Kind of a neat feature, because you can tell when the intended recipient reads it - when it transfers from your 'outbox' to your 'sent box = message read.
