I am about to purchase two Dendrobates tinctorius (Dyeing Poison Frogs) and I would like to get one male and one female. What are the characteristics I am looking for ?

Mr. Kawala,
unless you are purchasing adult frogs, it will be difficult to sex them.
If the juvis are old enough some breeders can make a good guess as to
the sex.

Get your tank situation squared away before you get your frogs, also be sure you have some food ready for them before they arrive. If you are feeding fruit flys, get the hang of culturing them before your frogs arrive, or secure a good source for your fruit flys.

If the frogs are adults, you may be able to sex them correctly. First of all, you need to compare the front toe pads. The males toe pads will be significantly larger and more "clover shaped" than the females. The females toe pads will be about the same size as her hind toe pads. Next, the female will be slightly larger and rounder in body shape, than the male. But of course the best indicator of sex is to see a frog calling

Age-wise. Tincs that are closer to a year old (out of the water) are about when you can start to attempt to sex them thru various means:

1. Toe pads
2. Body habitus (shape)
3. Social Behaviour
4. Possible Calling
