Re: Vacation - Leaving Frogs alone for days ?

We usually hire a pet-sitter for the cats. She also feeds the fish and is good at spotting problems- she's spotted a couple of sick fish before. The first couple of times we left the frogs, I poked holes in the mesh lid of a FF culture and put it in there so they'd gradually hop out. Frogs liked it....

Re: Water Features - Necessary for Dart Frogs ?

I keep a little water dish with my tincs. They rarely use it, but I figure it's not going to hurt anything and it can be an emergency wet-source if something weird happens to dry the tank out.

Re: Orange Isopods - Not sure if I saw what I saw......

I had a number of madagascar hissing cockroach babies at one point. I found one of them with its back half eaten, still crawling around alive. Gave them fish food with protein and calcium, and they didn't do that again. Not sure which they were after.

Re: What's a good humidity measure?

I'm in Texas, we get weather mood swings, but we have decent climate control. The gauge I used to have would say 77% or so most of the time, but said gauge is gone for some weird reason... not sure where it went. I don't know the best way to measure the humidity, but I know the level that makes the ...

Any idea if wild ferns can be collected for vivs?

We live in Central Texas, so we don't get much water. However, I can find ferns in a few wet places, and it feels about as humid in those spots as in my viv. Also, we visit Tyler now and then, and there's ferns up there that grow in places like the concrete walls of rain ditches. I know a lot of wil...

Re: Carnivorous plants in Vivaria – a Guide

Tree frogs in pitchers? Yep.
I know a grower who has a bunch of pitchers with traps over an inch wide. They sometimes find dead anole lizards in there, and once they found a small mouse in one.

Re: Any doofus-proof orchids?

I can get cheap ones at Home Depot, but I don't really like it when they just all die off. They usually have moth orchids... I could probably look for smaller ones and put them higher up, though it's an 18" square and doesn't have much room for the foot-wide moths they usually have.

Re: Misting vs. the correct humidity.

Sometimes my tincs flee from the mister, sometimes they don't care because I'm feeding them, and one of them occasionally hops out and sits at the edge where the drops are tiniest. And I have used a direct spray from the mister to make a frog turn and go back inside when he looked like he was going ...

What's a good humidity measure?

I think I have a feel for what humidity the frogs like. And I mean 'feel' literally- I stick my hand in and feel the air. There's one specific humidity-feel that makes the frogs come out and look happy, and I can usually keep it there. Pretty sure that's about what they like, but I'd like to know ex...

Re: Mister water - what kind to use ?

I have a hand mister. I use water from my aquarium in it, which the plants seem to like. Water in the aquarium has had water conditioner added to it to make it safe for fish, and I only refill the mister when the water's been sitting for at least a week to make sure there's nothing in there that nee...

Re: What are everyone's thoughts on rainwater

I wouldn't use it in an area near a city... all kinds of stuff in there. Could potentially build up in the habitat.

Re: heating and humidity ?

I have a big spray bottle that I spray with once or twice a day.
Backgrounds of some kind lining the sides and back should help keep the temps stable.

Any doofus-proof orchids?

I'm looking for orchids that don't really need much care, ones that won't mind terribly if they're just left in the back of the viv to do their thing. I won't mist them, but they may end up damp. Also, there's no circulation in there at the moment. Used to be a rigged computer fan in there, but the ...

Re: MOSQUITOES IN LEUC TANK!

The 'dillweed' is called duckweed. Crazy hardy little plant.
Probably the mosquitos all came from one that got in at some point and laid eggs.

Hi!

I've been keeping dart frogs for a few years. Forgotten exactly how long. I started with a 15g tank and two male 'Cobalt' tincs. I later upgraded to an 18" cube vivarium with clay-lined walls. Unfortunately, I lost one of my tincs to a vitamin A deficiency, something I don't intend to repeat. O...
