Making money in the Dart Frog Hobby ?
#41
"WHO CARES!"...

That, BTW, is my new mantra that encompasses too many views today, on too many topics.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

If tone is more important to you than content, you are at the wrong place.

You can see from a recent thread, where people get all bent out of shape on which frogs to pair with which frogs....

and WHY ?? Why o' why is the topic so inflammatory ???

SAME exact reason for EVERYTHING in life - Business, Politics and yes..even Religion.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$Money$$$$$$$$$$$$

Nobody wants to be cheated by a 'worthless' pumilio. Nobody wants to lose their frog-investment ! That's why lines are so important. That's why things are worth lying about.

There MAY be a sliver of altruistic hobbyists in our niche hobby...less than 20%, I'd warrant.

Just remember..."When somebody's cryin' or lyin' - it's all about $$"...not the frogs themselves. Lets be real here people.

^^ I think I'm gonna add that catch phrase to my DD T-shirt roll out this year.

Umm

Just and FYI

People there are a lot of other ways to make more money, faster than dealing with frogs.

Now I know that you might see Rich driving his Ferrari around and pulling into his mega mansion. But I assure you that it took him a very long time to get to where he is.

It's actually much faster to work your way up through a fast food chain.

Or Panhandle.

line up 10 people in the hobby...faces..screen names...

Ask yourself:

1. How long have they been in the hobby ? 1 year ? 3 years ?....13 years?

2. Do they host gatherings, put on IAD, Frog Day, MARS meetings, Microcosm ?

3. Do they offer to trade back animals to get you a Prove pair ? Do they continue to work with you as a valued client ?

4. Do you see them post and post and post and help people on a forum, facebook...email ?

TWO out of 10 people do...in my opinion.

2

We....WE...have got to start doing better and increasing that number.

attaboy...you've come to the right place/hobby - little coloured froggies WILL MAKE that dream a reality. Hell, this website alone provided enough income to live in a Florida McMansion, gated community and private pool and Jacuzzi !

Dreams CAN come true !!!

Uhhh I wouldn't dream of being seen in something so low class.

Why don't you just hitch hike. The two are basically the same.

to re-cap. Little colored frogs are not making anyone wealthy or even well-off. It just ain't happening.

I love it when I hear people say "I'm going to import my OWN frogs'....'make some fat stacks'

Actually, I'm surprised we don't get 1-2 people every other month or so, telling us how they are going to make it rich by breeding frogs.

Very surprised it doesn't surface more often.

Are we producing too many frogs here in the U.S ? Are we getting 'too good at it' ?

9 out of 10 people want to breed their frogs, so the natural progression is sell, sell, sell or trade.

We have an 'embarrassment of riches" or are we 'our own worst enemy' ?

Thoughts ?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to breed your frogs. Go ahead and breed a handful...

Breeding hundreds from a single pair is irresponsible breeding, period!

wow, I see the new business in TN -claiming that they have 'thousands' of frogs for sale. As much as I'd like to see this hobby grow, I just can't believe this is going to work. It certainly will not have the profitability of larger animals and reptiles.

I caution against going too big. It's far too risky. There just is not the amount of money and profit here, that most people believe.

Wholly sheet I was just about to put up a post about this.....

"On the issues you raise, we did a pre-market study on dart frogs and why they are not perceived as a retail pet assuming supply issues could be overcome."

I was in tears over this.

I feel bad for the frogs. There was a guy posting on here about having so many epipedobates or vittatus or something and of course, no one was inquiring and I can just imagine the breeder adults continuing to 'breed away' !

Oh yea the 2000 for sale guy. Seems pretty unbelievable, but if it is, sounds like nothing more than a froggy mill like the puppy mills that produce horribly inbred puppies for petstores. Either way, good luck getting rid of 500 powder blues, or what they renamed them. In case you did not see, they slapped their own trendy names on each morph and species. Then with the daddy posting saying, "I spent his college money and sold the corvette I bought him to do this." I am sure they will further the hobby greatly. I was hoping he would post the same shit here so there would be real criticism of it.

Wouldn't the world be a much better place if every frog only cost $5? Everyone would be able to afford their favorite species that way and there would be no incentive for smugglers to decimate wild populations. We should form a $5 frog club and if you're a member then you buy/sell all frogs for $5 with other club members. I bet that would piss off the smugglers. This hobby is such a small niche and a lot of the frogs reproduce in pretty abundant numbers that something like that might work? Ideas?
