frog fecals - info needed

Postby Lanthia » Wed Feb 03, 2016 6:06 pm

Please explain what the tests are for a newly acquired frog. Do I need two or three; one stool and two DNA? So far I haven't found a vet who doesn't insist I bring the frogs in. Can anyone give me a good argument against this? I said they are too fragile and that stress is our big enemy.

Is Dr. Frye still around and do we have a current address for him?

I have the name of the vet who is suppose to be the local reptile expert so I want to be knowledgeable before I call him.

I understand how to get the stool samples but I have swabbed dogs for DNA and they barely hold still for it. I can't imagine doing a df. I don't suppose you can clicker train them much.

This is a good thread to start with on QT procedures:

Here's a thread on testing and down further in the posts are links to the San Diego zoo swabbing procedures.

I use the same dna lab that Beth uses. I have been using dr.frye.vetatmilan "at" gmail.com recently so there is another address to try if the other doesn't work out.
Jim from Austin please contact me if you are willing to trade offspring from:

Thanks Jim for the additional input. :)
Swabbing frogs isn't that bad if you go to amphibian ark they also have videos.
I have used Dr Frye for years to test only recently have been using my local vet who will send the fecals to the lab with an understanding that he will not prescribe drugs or treatment based on the results. It's a little more expensive than Dr Frye but in Tx it's so hot that with the overnight to Dr Frye evens out the cost.
