Moderators ? Yes, no, maybe.....

This forum will never be "heavily moderated". That said, most of you have seen in the last several hours, that this forum will not be a free for all either. I will encourage and permit all the "big boy" topics - Conservation, Husbandry methods, Medicines and even the mundane topics although they will be confined to the Soap Box or Lounge, obviously.

Three people have contacted me requesting to be considered for a Moderator position. I do need a couple West Coast people that are online late at night to make sure that we have late night coverage from time zone to time zone.

In any case, even though I am somewhat familiar with some of those who volunteered, I would like to see a lot more posting and in-depth thread starting from some members inorder to further evaluate some things.

Id be happy to take on the position, Being able to tell someone they are wrong, tell them to piss off and delete or ban them hell yeah.

As long as the royal rumble is permitted over there I dont think you have to worry about it. Though I would like Richard to come and answer a few questions. I seem to get banned for asking them over there. Will be trying again on the 3rd.

Phil the best mod very likely would be a brand new frogger or someone with no attachment to the board or hobby. other than that someones always going to be pissed or one sided.

Mike,

Did you read my post on the "locked thread" thread? No one here get's banned unless they stalk someone with repeated PM's when told to stop or threaten something criminal.

Someone is always going to be upset....this IS the interweb after all. We can't be perfect or even try to be close. We do our best to help people and hope that there will be information found here to help them and their animals.

No One at all will be banned? This just may become the hosting arena for future royal rumbles. Im all for the moderation of the forum as far as the threads go. Too many things do get buried that otherwise would make great teaching guides so maybe a mod or two that take care of the BS posts whether they me from me or who ever in order to keep the substance to BS ratio on the good side. Some may disagree and say leave it all but its not my choice as far as this board or any other gos.
Seriously No one? You may regret that.

lol maybe just make a special forum area for the trolls and restrict their access to that area. Wink Sort of like the thunderdome at the other site.

I didn't say "Never".....

That would get someone banned here.

Already done...

We have the "Soap Box". It's a lot older than the "Thunderdome" as well.

Posts don't show up as "new" or recent, so they never "tickle" or roll. Acess is denied unless you are a member, so no guests can stumble into it. It even has an "Enter at your own Risk Sign".

It's tight. 8)

Plenty of names come to mind on the above.....

I think the trolls etc. can have the other forum all to themselves, along with the Susandome, oops Thunderdome.
Sometimes bans are not needed, the members can oust the perpetrators or when the pressure is on they leave and do not come back.

Just some thoughts......

Exactly Beth,

It's funny how things evolve and spring forth from other things right ?

Different sub forums are created because of a need....evolution.

Different websites and forums are created or become new and revived.....evolution.

Either way maybe it will get better. But I would focus on setting a standard for this place before the crowd rolls in. Nothing like being your same old self and then the way of life on a board gets yanked out from underneath you. I plan to play my role well. Teach and lead by example. And of course call BS when I see it.

Ultimately, you will need somebody to step into your place Phil, you cant be/do everything all the time. Eventually you'll have to step away for something or take a break from monitoring for whatever reason. Its best to have somebody in place on a permanent basis of some kind for when you cant be around, not just a babysitter that steps in for a week here or there.
Somebody who will be recognized as having "authority". Just my 10 cents...

hmmm. I've had 2 PM's and an email, all indicating that this forum should not have a "group of moderators".

Without going into detail and respecting the confidentuality of the authors, I think I "get it".

They are saying that other forums seem to be represented by a particular group or clique' and that produces a certain vibe for the entire forum.

Someone has got to have some sort of authority and final say, or this will just be one big wall full of spraypaint though, but I must admit, I never really gave a ton of thought to a forum being looked at as a "good ole boys club".

Buy a forum, run a forum, learn something new about other people's viewpoints. Interesting.

The roll and extent of a moderator if one comes to be here should be set by you Phil, you own it Smile. My only point is that youve already had to close a thread or 2 for whatever reason, now, assume your on one of your snake hunts down south of the boarder, out of sight, out of mind and the nearest extension cord to recharge your phone is 100 kilometers away, somebody will have to do something at some point, and if joe blow shows up that no body knows and says "im in charge now" you'll have more of a mess to mop up when you get back. I agree that moderation should be kept to a minimum, and I'm too green around the gills to be in a clique, but you will need a "minnie me" at some point. Just sayin'...and I'm not applying for the postition either...Smilethat whole green gill thing...
Also, wasnt around then, dont know what went on then, but I have read some of corey's posts, and sounds like he had his hands pretty full. Not that I'm saying he made mistakes, I dont know anything about this stuff, but history can repeat itself if you dont learn from it.

well you dont want to change your view point on the hobby entirely. I know if I owned a forum I wouldnt expect any more from anyone that Im known for. If I changed overnight to a mr nice guy all are loved and no hand slaps people would not know what to do. Being someone loved by all the other admins of the board you should know what I mean. They expect more or better than they preset themselves as.
I still think if your going to have a mod someone new or unrelated to the hobby should do it. Even a paid mod to jump on once a day and clean up.
I wouldnt want to mod moderate my own board. I'm just not capable doing it and remaining calm.

I think what they are referring to was "active moderation" or pro-active moderation.

I'm in agreement with needing help for vacations, being away from the computer, time zone coverages ect.

On the other forum that I am a moderator on the mod's don't just close, delete or ect (unless its spam)

We report a post, All the moderators get a notification that a post has been reported and the reason why. then in the private moderator forum we discuss it as a group and the appropriate action with the forum owner having the ultimate say....sadly the frogger genera seem to have a few more whiners and fight starters than the Reefer's. Thankfully its only a small handfull who for the most part are only out to get one particular person.

this method helps quell the cry of Moderator abuse...sensorship ect. Honestly though outside of the occasional big swear word, porn spam (that we tend to keep around in the moderator forum for further review Wink ) and people trying to cheat on contests the only real need for Moderators is the keep the forum alive and kicking.

Moderators are not just there to treat everyone like children, they are there to make sure no question goes unanwered, to make new comers feel welcome, they are the life and breath of a good active forum.

I could go on and on about the duities of a GOOD moderator. If their only job is to make sure everyones egos get stroked and to keep people from leaving feedback then they will obviously be unliked.

Another possibility is not labeling the moderators, this keeps people from singling them out as the "enemy" they are just a part of the forum crowd. I am sure most do not wish to be treated any differently.

Sure, you can keep them listing in a site staff section or something but dont have the title MOD under their name.

Usually the site owners will keep their eyes open for individuals that are active and helpful in the forum. Individuals Answering questions and acting civily. If they like them, they bring them up with the other moderators and ask their opinions on the individual. If everyone agrees that person would be a good fit then they invite that person to be a moderator.

Not everyone has a power trip...Catfur comes to mind

Or create a username like Moderator1, Moderator2 and so on so they can log in as that unknown to all who they are. I would still consider someone completely neutral. It wont be hard to see if a moderator has a grudge against any on person or group while posting is slow here.
