Depends on the forum. On frog-related forums I have started posting more or less immediately, while on other forums like Caudata.org or Field Herp Forum I have an account for the purpose of reading the occasional thread that catches my interest but I don't have any contributions to make it worth posting.

It was a few weeks for me once I got to the point in my research that I had some questions....

I lurked quite a while. I'm not much for online stuff, this is about the only thing I use the internet for (I still pay all my bills via snail mail). It took me a while to "get comfy", it was quite a while too before I felt that I had enough knowledge to actually contribute something to a conversation.

I posted on here relatively quickly, don't post much though, even when I have an opinion, its interesting to watch discussions develop.

I didnt have the proper option for me! LOL! But mostly lurker! I will post every now and then to let people know I am alive and not a bot! But I just absorb and read alot! Honestly...just too much drama with alot of stuff nowadays and I find it easier and better to just sit back and be quiet! There are times and will be times, if I feel really strong about something I will post right off the bat. But alot of it depends on scenario. I still consider my self as a tier or so higher than just beginner! Even though I have been doing this for as long as I have and with the years upon years of reptiles...There is still so much to learn and take in. So i try to read as much as I can and learn from everyone! If I have problems with something or want opinions or input then I almost have to post right? But I am trying to become a little more active with the forums and to meet new people and make some new connections within the hobby!

I guess it depends on the forum... If it is something I have already researched or have some experience in, Its easy to tell right away if a particular forum is 'right' for me. If its subject I am interested in learning more about, or not experienced in, I lurk for a few weeks during my research stage to see if its something I want to be apart of.

I lurk frequently, but don't post much. I might be the member Phil was referring to.

I started noticing around 2005 that a lot of the the best information I found on husbandry was on the forums so I started doing searches for info there. Didn't start posting though until a friend encouraged me to this year.
