Hi. I am considering converting my 40 gallon tall which is currently housing tropical fish. The dimensions are 30w x 12.5d x 24h. I would turn it on it's side and use a conversion kit with the opening facing one side. That would make the viewing dimensions 24w x 30h.
My question is what frogs would work best considering the height of this setup? I really like the azureus, auratus, variablilis and imitators. What I've read the azureus are mainly terrestrial. The auratus will climb, but would they utilize the full height? And I know the thumbs are climbers, but from what I've read they are not best beginner frogs.

I think there would not be enough floor space for Azureus or Auratus. My Auratus do climb a little bit but they spend the majority of their time on the ground. I think the trickiest thing about thumbnails for beginners is their size. It's difficult to get a feel for how small they really are, until you've seen them.
I always recommend the "Petco or Petsmart" sales that are twice a year for $1.00 per Gallon !
A 20 gallon "long" or "high" is an ideal starter tank size for 2 or 3 frogs and only 20 bucks new !
Then you can buy a glass top, not have to worry about a conversion kit and siliconing it in and draining and turning a tank on it's side ect.
Much easier....especially since you are new, and this would be your first viv. Keep it simple and small to start !

You are in luck too....S. Michigan has a number of fellow hobbyists and quality frogs to choose from. You are definitely going to be able to pick up your choice of species and most likely, for a discount if you peck around and post a wanted ad (when you are ready).
Josh's Frogs is here in MI and I've already talked to him about visiting them. I will be going to a local reptile show soon, too, just to look around and meet a few people.
And I'm not just blowin' sunshine...you guys are so kind and encouraging. Here, there really is no such thing as a stupid question. I haven't read a single thread here that is negative or belittling. And the threads you start in which you pose a question for discussion are very helpful and insightful.

Missed your post - Regarding Auratus - I moved my Auratus from a 20L to a 29 vert. In the 20L they always wanted to climb, jumping at the glass top...(a 20L is only 12" high w loss due to substrate) now in the 29vert setup they spend 90% of time in the top 70% - I have a big brom where both sleep at night. I also catch them using the film cans. They can climb everywhere but the ceiling. They also leave natures gifts everywhere but the ceiling. HA hope that wasnt too crude. Mine also enjoy water. The 29vert was not designed w a water feature - so I put extra film cans for them to get moisture. The 29 on its side still has lots of "leaf litter" capacity, especially for only 2 frogs. So, saying all that, if you wanted a vert style w your 40g and you decided on Auratus I think youd have a nice setup. But your viv is also tall enough that it would not impede "vertical" height for a frog that likes to climb. Disclaimer - not all frogs of same species may behave the same, so take my experience w grain of salt.

I sure wish all frogs of the same species did behave the same so there'd be a clear cut answer to this question and 100 others.

I have 2 Costa Rican Auratus - 95% male /female (saw my suspected Male call and he has toe pads like a male) No call from prob female and she exhibited behavior of mating (back petting the male)
If I was to get another morph, think it would be blue and bronze. That is a stunning frog. heck, they all are....
That green is beautiful!!! It looks metallic! Might sound funny, but it reminds me of an old Buick my dad used to have. HA!
