Monkey... Never said you were attacking Glenn at all.

Phil... I cant roll with it on a very serious issue that we should all be concerned about. And in which one person has stated, in this thread, had caused him turmoil and much money. Jokes are jokes and funny is funny. But putting this subject into a catagory of lightheartedness is in my opinion irresponsible. Yeah it's not defcon 4, probably not 3, but do we take it lightly until it is?

Sean
There is a U tube version of the 2011 ranavirus symposium on this page:
http://fwf.ag.utk.edu/mgray/ranavirus/2011Ranavirus.htm

All we can do is learn what we can and test. I would rather buy frogs from someone who does proper QT and testing than those that don't.

I also feel Glen should be commended on his transparency and efforts to test and QT properly.
There is research on ranavirus not much on darts but there have been die offs in the wild in amphibians from the disease. The above link has quite a bit of information and is worth reading or at least skimming through.

Unless you run a private, and heavily moderated, forum, it kind of comes with the territory. I just tend to ignore it (it's really not worth getting worked up over)
Ok so our options are... Never happened, move along people, or den of jackals? There has to be a mid ground where things can be discussed openly without fear of condemnation.

Sean
And this is a subject to get worked up on. If ignored it could soon find a collection near you. I think any and all helpful info is beneficial to us all.

you really think it was a "den of jackles" response(assuming you're solely talking about this thread)? If so, I still think you're over reacting to one stupid joke. Like I said, ignore it and move on
Research on the transmission, life cycle, and severity of RV in dart frogs would make a great thesis project. If done in a laboratory setting, and not a private collection, conditions could be better controlled and there would be no fear of creating a stigma for an individual hobbyist. I agree that Glenn has done us a great service by being open about his experiences with RV and I too would have no hesitation buying frogs or anything else from him.

I also agree with Phil that this is probably going to turn out to be a relatively mild and widespread pathogen that might not require extraordinary controls. Given that in other species of frogs it affects tadpoles and froglets more severely, perhaps we might find that this is one of the causes of high mortality among obligate froglets, and dart frog tadpoles in general.

I'm speaking as broad spectrum of what this particular forum can be at times just as you were in referring to db being evasive in your previous post.

Sean
I would say neither. I plan to test frogs from several vivs that I have had for at least a year and appear healthy. If I get a positive, I'll monitor the infected frogs' health and test again in a couple of months. If there are positives with no unusual illnesses or deaths in my collection (which I have not seen in over 2 years of having much of my current collection), then I will tend to think that this is the frog equivalent of a cold virus in severity, at least for dart frogs. If I get negative results on my established frogs, I'll test some of my more recent acquisitions and follow the same procedure. The peace of mind is worth a couple hundred bucks. And, I will commit to reporting my results here; however, so as not to create problems for anyone from whom I have gotten frogs, I won't post the source of my frogs unless I get permission from the seller first. Besides, I haven't gotten any new frogs in over 2 months, so the seller might not be the source of a given positive test.

I understand that swab samples do not have to be sent by express package services, so in order to keep costs within reason, I'll send the samples via Ground or USPS, so it might be a couple of weeks before I can report my results. I will, however, follow the protocol given by the lab I use and I might even try to get some photos of the process.

If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to post or, if you're more comfortable, send me a PM.

Glenn - thanks again for taking the first leap of faith on this issue.

Ahh, understood.

Sean, we are as transparent as possible here. I assure you that this RV issue is being taken seriously. No one joked more than once, no one said "move along",but I don't think i'm alone in my stance to throttle this back just a bit. This thread is open and can go on and on with postings.

I think you are being a little over critical with the "den of jackals" reference. Things can get a little more pointed here..but it's the Coke vs Pepsi thing.
Uhh Did anyone even watch the movie? (28 weeks later)
The plot of the movie was exactly the point I was trying to make. But it doesn't appear that anyone made the connection or saw the movie.

So just to be clear.....

I need to add ranavirus testing to QT.
Right now I have 3 benedicta in QT and I have not done fecals yet so I figured I will get all the rage virus testing done at the same time.

Anything else I should test for that I am missing?

-Byron
Being that I am just starting out and have a relatively small collection it would be best if I did my testing now. Rather than building a collection and being infected from the start.

-Byron
Run fecals for parasitic infections and swab for chytrid while your at it.
Hey Guys,

I apologize for not responding earlier. I just finished driving 9 hrs and getting a 100 questions from US customs...Confusedhock: Another 10-12 hours of driving tomorrow and then saturday is frog day! I'll get a break on friday.

First off, I don't feel I was attacked by anyone, nor do I care to be honest. Not everyone is going to agree with what I'm doing. Sometimes I wonder myself...The whole point of this thread was to say that I have RV positive frogs, that are doing okay right now and I will continue to post what I observe. (Keep in mind please that the strain is unknown) I'm guessing it's not widespread, but definitely worth testing for. The more people test the more info we will gain. I mentioned before that two other collections were tested and came back negative. IMO it's another test that should be added to the "acquiring new frogs" box.

Best
FYI, the PCR lab can use the same swab to test for chytrid and ranavirus.
These are the first tests I do for my frogs in QT, when clean I do step 2 with 3 clean fecals 1-2 weeks apart.
I have a PCR Lab close to me so get same day results if I get the swab there before noon.
Until I get my results I feed springtails.
It seems to me that there is more interest in arguing about the tone of the off-topic posts in this thread than the original subject matter - information and testing of RV. I offered to test and publicly report the results here, but if there is no interest, I'll probably wait a while.

No, go ahead and do it up!

Jim it is your collection test if you want or do not test. Your perogative, your frogs.
Whether you post it or not is your business.
I will give my results ( the lab e-mails them to me via my labels on my swabs) to the buyers of my
juvies.

Honestly, I have 6 more morphs to test, including the darts I am picking up at FrogDay ( have tested 6 ) but the results so far on my collection are negative.

IMO what is posted on forums is just posted, maybe look at the person who is posting and form your own opinion. I take it with a grain of salt.

I do what I can to be sure that my frogs are clean, modern technology is a great thing and I will take advantage of it.

Sorry Phil, hope this is not a hijack.
