I'm looking to purchase some isopods so figured id ask the pros.Which isopod would be the best for the average tank ?

Dwarf white = overall suitably / good size ect.

Costa Rican / Purple = reproduce very quickly.

Both that Phil recommended are best for reproduction.

Oranges look cool,but they take a while to reproduce.They are bigger so small frogs won't eat them but they will eat the offspring which are tiny almost like springs.

I really, really like the CR purple for a number of reasons.
The produce very well, as mentioned. They are smaller than 'average' isos. And the big one is they move different. They have more actions and speed in their movement and I would say that's an attractant to the predator in the tank. And their color stands out OK against leaves and such so that makes them easier prey also. Some of my Barus are sitting on a culture right now picking them off.

I agree they do move different and the frogs seem to eat them up,adults and all!

Rich could you post a good picture please of the CR purple,I'm curious as to whether your talking about a similar species that some of us culture here(UK). I have no species info of said beastie we keep. It is very fast in movement, nothing like dwarf white and seems to prefer slightly more moist conditions. The "fast grey as we know it is much less partial to feeding as I would DW from my humble experience,but seems to thrive on/IN leaflitter,

I'll throw in my two cents

I am culturing dwarf white, cr purple, stiped/Hawaiian, oranges

Also just got some calico, and giant cave isos.

They all are profic after a few months. Agreed, the purples are my favorite. They seem to travel between cultures and have colonized a white, and striped iso culture. The oranges once going are unstoppable. They will eat the leaf litter quickly, and one viv has had the background (an old cocofiber roll background) half eaten my oranges. Also, adults can't seem to get out of film cans, so I have found a few drowned. I feed vege peels, fish food, and rapashy's bug burger. Isos love it, spread it like butter on a piece of cork

CR purple next to a AAA battery. They will get a bit bigger than the one pictured, but not too much.

Im really liking the purple. they don't have the same tendency to play dead and curl up like the adult dwarf white have. unfortunatly my starter cultures i got weren't the greatest so iv been just letting them go until I have enough to start actually using them in viv.

Hmm,difficult to tell it could be the same beastie,and with your movement description,plus size ,it looks right.some how I'll endevour to return the favour ,but bare with me,i'm under the cosh at the moment,plus I fear mine might not sit still very long,they really are quick.Bring in the pooter,I hear someone mumble

I'm not an entomologist by any means Stu, but I'm thinking the chance we all have the same CR small, fast, pink, stranger moving isos is pretty great.
If you grab them and touch them enough before snapping a pic they seem to freeze up a bit.
Largest average adult size I am seeing is about 4mm.
I thought I had a cold, now I am thinking flu. On the couch drinking OJ by the half gallon.

I have the dwarf whites, striped, purple and orange isos all go to the pums except the orange I put them in my BYH and terrib vivs. I will add the repashy bug burger IMO really helps with blooms for the isos.

I have great success with purples and dwarf whites in all my vivs

Rich,here is said beastie,with a dwarf white for scale etc.,it would be kinda nice to know if its what you guys use, it helps with my translation :roll: :lol:
