We have found lots of information on Fruit Fly culturing, but nothing that states weather they need light or if can they be kept in a dark cupboard. Thanks

I keep mine in those rubbermaid drawer systems. So, they are not in the complete dark, but almost. I think it also keeps the cultures from drying out.
Also, some media really stinks and keeping them in a closed enclosure can keep the smell down.

Im new, but noticed on my first set of cultures that the one I left in the light had mold, others didnt.
Im using oatmeal, banana, applesauce, and vinegar as my media, and I love the smell. I would eat this stuff for breakfast!

I keep mine in complete darkness in a drawer in my desk. I have not noticed any reduced numbers in production. So I would say either is ok.

You can keep fruit flys either way, in the light, or in the dark.
If you keep them in the light, be sure that you do not place them where they will get direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause the temp in the cup to raise and possibly cooking the flys.
It is thought that there will be less mite development with cultures that are exposed to light as mites do not like light. Some people have been know to keep there cultures on shelves with flourescent lights on them 24/7.

I used the same media mixture in all my cultures, and only the one left in the light( no direct light, just room light, far from a window) grew mold. Others kept in a darker shelf are 2 weeks old with 0 mold. This is only my first experience, just wanted to share.

I think there have been studies where FF growth and production definitely benefits from a photo period (light).
