Should I buy a Humidity gauge of some type?

Nope. They are almost all, cheap trash. Do not waste your money. 98% of them - retail sold, are not meant to be inside a humid vivarium, and 80-90% almost constant humidity will cause them to fail and have false readings. Stay away from them.

Use the 'Eyeball and finger" method.

First, make sure you have some standing water in your false bottom. Don't know what a 'false bottom' is? It's the hollow space under your substrate that hold excess water. You need it or your enclosure will be a sloppy wet mess and your plants will die.

When you have some water in your false bottom, you can literally see that there is some degree of humidity inside the enclosure. I like to have between 1 and 3" of water down there at all times.

Won't it get stinky and dank and need changed? Nope. It really doesn't smell. There is a zookeeper in NJ that says it's clean enough and without problems that he will drink false bottom water. Seriously.

You need to HAND mist your enclosure. Do not buy a silly fogger. They are dangerous, get hot, malfunction, shit the bed after prolonged use and only add SURFACE moisture, not long lasting deeper water humidity. Foggers are crap just like gauges.

Initially Spray your whole tank down - everything. Get all the substrate hit with spray. Now, pause and take some dirt (substrate) and ball it up and squeeze it in your fist. Is it too dry? Is it so wet that water pours out. You want MOIST....not wet...not dry.

Same with plants and wood and tank hardscape - moist a couple times a day...never totally dry. The tank should have a lower humidity period - mine gets 50-65% guestimate of course, during the day and 70-90% at night and early morning. You will get good at looking and feeling and judging the humidity. It just takes a little time.

Lastly, make sure you have a GLASS lid. Not saran wrap, not plexiglas...a proper glass lid. Also make sure it's not sealed. Frogs must have airflow or they will die from lack of O2 or evaporative inability - similar but cause by heat plus lack of O2.

You lid should have @ 15-20 percent of it be either holes or screen or some other venting near the front of the tank.

I've grown tired of my old lascar data loggers - the company stubbornly remains windows only for their support software, and we're Mac/Linux only. I found these $35 temperature and humidity loggers on amazon - build quality is kind of cheap, but for what I'm using them for, they turned out to be pretty cool.

I bought two of these for my tree monitor project as a test run to see how well they work. I ended up drilling access ports behind a basking area and in a dark hide on the other end of the PVC viv. This may be trickier with my existing glass boxes since i have all the access ports in the zoomeds and exoterras covered with my top glass, but I can drill a port in my top glass at some point.

Using the single probe for temp and humidity was a bit glitchy for me so I wired both. I set them to 1 minute samples with circular logging (11 day duration, 16,000 datapoint buffer) and ran it for about a day then checked the data through their MacOS (!) app.

I'll be working with them longer term tuning misting cycles and temperatures, but this is an interesting and cheap device that could be pretty useful. This viv is running at a gradient of 90% RH to 60% RH, and 72F to 93F which is pretty close to where I want to be. I have been spot checking other areas with my temperature gun, but I really like having the data logged to see continuous Temp & RH at least during my viv tuning cycles. This big viv is going to have permanent loggers though.

This company has even cheaper temperature only loggers that are similar to the Lascar design where you can just drop a USB logger directly in the viv. I didn't find a similar model with RH support, so I ended up going the probe route. I'm also not interested in more expensive models - I think have a higher number of cheaper loggers is more useful for really understanding the behavior of a viv.

EDIT: I went back and noticed they do have a USB RH/Temp logger that you can drop in the viv - these may be better for spot checking random vivs here and there:

So in a couple other threads on DB and on plantedtank.net I created posts comparing the stats between some of these different lights and I thought It might be nice/helpful to consolidate all the info into one thread for people to reference, subscribe/bookmark, or in case they don't get over to those forums... whateverz . IF anyone wants to add other stats/feature lists for other lighting fixtures with similar functionality please feel free

I also offer a few thoughts, but in full disclosure have not seen/used the Currentusa Sat+PRO, Ecoxotic E-series, or Aquaticlife Edge. I do have a Finnex 24/7, and I have researched all 4 brands fairly extensively, but of course encourage everyone to do so for themselves and use their own judgement.

This thread is meant to serve mostly as an objective comparison of stats/feature rather then any type of review. No pics or videos in this first post (as of 6/2/2015) are mine so all credit goes to the creators of that stuff...

So here we go...

The E-series has a reflector and then there is some slight wattage and ACTUAL length differences. The Pro is cheaper, has 6500K whites and more RGBw that probably mean better color blending, and the E has 8000K whites with fewer RGBw's. Unsure if the 6500k vs 8000k make much difference since you can adjust the Kelvin with the RGBw's.

Haven't seen the lights in person so not sure if the wattage differences, reflector, number of RGBw in correlation to the 6500k Vs 8000k make much difference.

But here are the stats on each for reference...
Basically it seems the Finnex isn't quite as powerful, and not quite as adjustable as the other 2 lights mentioned so far, but it adds the colored dawn/dusk FX, is super easy to set the 24/7 mode, and offers automated dawn/dusk FX in a considerably cheaper light, that still has respectable intensity compared to the other 2. You are kinda stuck with the pre programmed 24/7 color/intensity settings if you want the dawn/dusk mode, where as I think you can adjust the intensity of the sat Pro or E-series dawn/dusk cycle, but what you loose in customization, I think will be made up for by price for a lot of people.
So the Aquaticlife Edge light seems to give up some of the presets and the colored dawn/dusk (which may be a pro or con), and adds about $20-$40 in cost over the Finnex, but still less then the Sat+PRO/E-series, and has that battery backup now.

Looks like it kinda fills the niche between the Finnex 24/7 and the Sat+PRO and E-series. This might be a good option for those who just don't want the colored dawn/dusk FX of the 24/7 (which I actually really like) and prefer something more traditional, at the cost of giving up some preset modes and adjustable colors, while still saving $$$ over a Sat+PRO or E-series.

I have certain needs/wants and no loyalty to Finnex, CurrentUSA, Ecoxotic, or AquaticLife, and will probably try all 4 brands over the next few months; assuming the brand that works best for me is still available, I'll go mostly with that light for most of my vivariums... but so far I'm really liking the Finnex 24/7 for the features/price, but I think any of these lights will probably serve my purposes

Newest version of this light includes a battery backup which is an important feature, and I'm unsure how the other lights mentioned in this thread handle power outages.

Ive seen the YouTube videos and they look amazing. Im just not sure if it would be enough or if it would be overkill. The tank is 20 gallong long I believe. Im willing to drop the cash on a nice lighting system just want to make sure I invest in the right one. The tank is going to be for dart frogs im just not sure yet as to which ones not sure if that matters
