UV lighting
#1

here is a nice article on UV lighting which has links to other articles. the ones about UV light transmission are interesting.

http://www.reptilesdownunder.com/reptil ... ghting.php

they state that UV is necessary for plant growth, but http://www.alpeninc.com/features/plant/index.html states that:

We often receive questions regarding plant sensitivity to ultraviolet light (below 380 nm). According to the Denver Botanical Garden’s* Horticulture Department and published reference materials, no ultraviolet light requirements have been documented for plant growth. High intensity artificial UV light is occasionally used by the Denver Botanical Gardens to sterilize soil and plant samples prior to planting.

i've heard anecdotally that some orchids require UV to bloom, and read some reports where different UV exposures helped some plants while retarding others.

are there any botanists who would like to clear the air a bit?
