How do you settle on a landscape ? I sort of have a plan in my head but can't materialize it to paper or even a dry setup in tank.

It can be a lot of arranging and re-arranging.
For backgrounds, we lay the tank on it back, and place the background items, and start moving things around. We will leave it for a day and come back and re-evaluate to see if we are still satisfied with the placement, if so we go forward, if not we start moving things around. Same process for landscaping.
