How Dart Den will be Moderated
#1
Since we now have several Administrators and more recently, a few members with Forum authority and permissions often referred to as Moderators, I think now would be an appropriate time to expound upon the duites and overall vibe of this forum, with regards to "Moderation".

There will be no clique or "Good old Boys club" here. No one should ever feel that the people working to bring this forum to life and continually update things here, will ever have an "us vs them" mentality. It will never happen. You will not see red lettering on members names or anything else that promotes a divergent theme.

Likewise, I want there to be no "active" moderation or "my way or the highway". This hobby is bigger than that. It's also most certainly bigger than any one forum or forum owner as well. I may own this forum but I only "own" a tiny, representative slice of the hobby - nothing more than my efforts and the help that I can bring to others - the animals, the new people.

There will be no "infractions" or banning as long as I can help it. While this sites TOS is strongly constructed and contains provisions for these things, I assure you that a ban is going to be a last resort for someone who continually stalks or threatens another member or engages in criminal behaviour. That type of thing. I would like to think that we - this forum's team, is strong enough and well balanced to handle most any problem. We'll try our best, that's for sure.

Threads will occassionaly be re-titled or moved to appropriate sub forums by us (Moderators) for ease of archival purposes and search-ability. I can also forsee an occasional deletion for inappropriate language or conduct. I would hope that everyone would agree that, that is a fair tradeoff as opposed to an infraction and banning based system. I have been on forums for over 10 years and I rarely ever had a problem with one of my posts being moved, adjusted or even deleted as long as I was treated like an adult. Oh there WILL be some heated and "Big Time" topics, discussions and arguments, but if there is ever a time when a post issue causes a problem, the door is always open to contact any Moderator or Admin member here to immediately discuss same. I honestly don't think there will be many issues here.

The moderator vibe here will be very low key, so much so, that you may post here for a long time and not even know exactly who IS a Mod here. Titles and coloured words are not going to be in-your-face. There are 5 Mods here right now, with a couple more possibly on the way, and if I know them like I think I do, they are more than content and happy just to go about their visits here without fanfare or fireworks - unnoticed for the most part.

That's it in a nutshell folks. Have fun. Post often. And contact any one of us, should you have ANY question, problem or suggestion.

GREAT quote by Daryl Eby on Field Herp Forum (one of my Fav's) regarding "Moderation" and the Community Forum dynamics.....

"This isn't Kingsnake.com. Our admin and mods allow this forum to exist as an actual community, not an over policed commercial exploit. As a community, we have our strengths and weaknesses. We have honorable members and asses. Sometimes they are hard to tell apart. By allowing us to speak our own minds, our mods allow us to judge for ourselves and give us the chance to learn, grow and change. They'll step in when and if they determine that things have become irredeemably personal, but first they'll give us the chance to police ourselves".

SPOT ON !!!

This is exactly how Dart Den will work.

....some good things can come out of suffering, anguish and apparent chaos.

Often, introspection and feedback by way of a thread, can be truly enlightening. And we all can look in the mirror and grow. No one is too old. No one is beyond changing.

I had to give up my collection. All of it. Fairly suddenly too. Those frogs were responsible for more personal help that anyone can imagine. They provided me with so much. So much, that I felt the need to post @ 10,000 times on various forums, even purchasing one in order to give back to the very animals that helped me through some very hard times in my life.

The point is, I guess, is that we are all human and subject to the multitudes of frailties and inadequacies that define our species. We only have a limited amount of effort, energy and most of all, time in which to accomplish things. I personally, don't believe a single, or even a small amount of incidents or posts define who we are. We should only be judged on our body of work, our help and contributions on the whole - to our fellow man and where we live.

Hang in there everyone. The best advice I can give is to post OFTEN and freely. Don't ever worry about what other people think or if a mod or an owner will delete your post or issue a 3 point infraction. The amount of good and positive things will always rise above the occasional rough-around the edges post. The alternative is to NOT post....and that makes us all the more poorer. I am 100% convinced of that.

Just a bit of rambling that I am not afraid to broadcast to the world.

No one is going to get "ripped to shreads" here...I won't allow it.

Now the "hard" questions, and "big-boy info"...yep...those are found here, and not many other places.

I'm certain I have about a dozen different PM's and emails saying how much members enjoy the "level playing field" and the posting of all the full info here on this particular forum.

I'm just happy to be able to help out in this stage of my life when I have some extra time....and happy to see something good, change and grow.

On Threads and Postings.....

If it is YOUR thread, i.e, you made it / started it - you get 'lee-way' as to what goes on in it. If you are ok with it being sidetracked, hijacked and littered with pics and extraneous stuff...then so be it.

The only time I will step in and lock it ect, is if it gets so out of hand that it's constantly distracting the forum from other threads ect.

This is exactly how Dart Den will work.

On "Lying and being bad for the hobby" :

Someone's particular definition of lying occurs with MUCH more frequency than you suspect. Likewise, there are several people that I can think of that could, should, perhaps be banned from this site for several reasons.

Criminality is one overriding issue. I try to attack that 100% head-on. Instances of that are:

1. Black Jungle having deli-cupped frogs stolen from their table and then resold to another vendor at White Plains.
2. Deli cupped frogs stolen from a MADS meet at a residence and surrounding turmoil.
3. A Dart Frog Hobby website taking many orders for products and never filling those orders.

Constant turmoil / PM's and posting telling me that I suck or am doing a bad job and God Forbid a PHONE CALL and voicemail. If you want to lash out at me thus-ly.....it will be one-and-done, I assure you. I have no tolerance for this.

What is "The Hobby" ?

Real quick...I'll write more later...

The Hobby - is proper Vendor Feedback for all businesses including Big and small. This is the Forum that started all vendor feedback and its the only forum that allows it to work correctly, as it should.

The Hobby - is allowing people to vent, swear occasionally, defend themselves ,rant ect. We are big people here, not too many 13 year olds with no life experience. Everyone can pull up their big boy pants on their own here. This is the only Forum that allows it.

The Hobby - contains many different, odd people, some of which you would never consider having a beer with or chatting it up at a Christmas party. Again, this is a microcosm of life. Deal with it. I try to accommodate ALL the different types, except the criminal element. I deal with those in a hard manner. This is the only forum that tries hard not to suppress, censor or threaten people. You see some weird and ugly stuff sometimes, but hey, that's life. This is not the kittens and rainbows forum enforced with a ruler poised above your knuckles.

No one in the Hobby is going to victimize people as long as I own and run this forum. My responsibility to the hobby and the animals, is to get ALL the info out there. Here on this forum, you will be able to judge people by their posts, or lack of posts. This forum uniquely allows for that.

This forum WILL shine the light in all the corners. Here, you will see how things truly happen, who people really are and just exactly, everything possible, relative to this hobby.

No one will be abused here. No one will be stalked or hounded. I won't allow it. But at the same time, please try to develop a skin thicker than a bowl of pudding.

When time-outs need to occur...when people need to be reminded that they are taking advantage of this unique place and my patience, then rest assured, I'll take action.

THIS Forum is the place where you'll get ALL your Dart Frog Hobby Information by leaps and bounds. I guarantee it.

Remember folks. We do not play favourites here on the 'Den. Sponsorship here does not buy you a 'free pass'. There is no insulation to be bought. We do not 'cover' for anyone here. If you have feedback (and have MET the criteria), post it up. If you feel ripped off by another person, then post it.

This bears repeated / bumped.

I'm partial of course, but I still feel we have the best Dart Frog Forum. I really do.

The other forum recently had a 10 page thread on a deal gone 'bad' and could only manage to tell the hobby that the name was 'Mr X". How does THAT help the hobby ? Are we supposed to expect that the PM system is the mode of operation here -the proper alert system for the Hobby ? I think that by not providing proper feedback and an accurate thread of a transaction gone bad... a forum like that is hurting the hobby.

We encourage the posting of full and accurate information and feedback here on Dart Den- always have since day 1.

This is the only forum that allows it. Make use of it and be forewarned or stay on other forums and take your chances.

mr x. hmmm. I didn't read that post. now I am curious what it was about. what was the sense of even posting if the name wasn't mentioned. should of just deleted the post from the beginning. I tried to post on the positive vendor feedback on the commercialized fog forum and it was deleted because I didn't word it right.
