Poll - How long have you been in the Dart Frog Hobby ?

Rusty_Shackleford Wrote:What I take out of this is there a significant amount of people that give the hobby up after 3 years.

They get overwhelmed I think.

These last 3 almost 4 years have really sucked prices have gone way down and people still complain about frog prices. Even though these are one of the easier pets that don't require a lot. People think they have to build these huge tanks and they spend the green on them only to turn around sell it and the frogs later for money to pay bills.

I think the poll results are very telling...

Say 100 new people get into the hobby in a given year.

@ 50 of them will drop out with 12 months or even less.

the other 50 will stay for sometime longer, with only @ 5 staying in the Hobby for 5 or more years.

that explains the 5-10% of hobbyists that are in for @ 10 years or more.

So those '50/50' numbers look like a wash right ? They are, in a way. The numbers make it SEEM like a large influx of newbs comes along with a certain regularity every year and it does, BUT that same number also EXITS the hobby almost just as soon.

I think we are lucky if we have a 2-3% net growth year.

Where do you get these numbers? Are you just guessing? Hypothetical?

Maybe they are not losing interest in frog keeping but the forums themselves.? Maybe some lose interest after all the questions and arguments about keeping mixed tanks and or tank size for example.
