Film canister issues - dead FF and colour bias

I want to let my Ranitomeya amazonica tank raise some tads and amies lay eggs beneath the surface of the water. The problem is that if I leave eggs, even in very clean water, after a week or 10 days the collected ff corpses in the bottom foul the water. At this point the eggs, which are fertile and developing, sink and rot.

Anybody got a great trick to keep ff's out without disturbing the clutch ? Do lids with holes big enough for the frogs make it better or worse ? I guess i'm going to try touching leaves to the water surface so that hopefully the flies can get out before they drown.

can you postion the canisters so they get rinsed when the tank gets misted?

they are laying in the water in film canisters. the canisters which catch spray from the mister heads still fill with flies. two prolems if i try to hand spray, first i'm not effective at cleaning out the flies...it sounds so easy, but the flies are at the very bottom underneath the clutch which floats near the surface. secondly the eggs will flip over and/or come spilling out of the film canister. the babies literally thrown out with the bathwater....

I would try pulling the cans out and let them lay only on leaves, if you are set on letting them do all the work.

Good thread for Ranitomeya amazonica and its husbandry issues (film cans).

Interesting note: Some Vents prefer white coloured film cans while other Dart Frog Species prefer black.

IMO, primarliy a species thing, but ya never know about the individual frog preference....

What I like to do, and this goes for broms or virtually everything else husbandry related, is give the frogs a variety of choices in which to use as egg and tad dosposition sites.

I also really recommend the "3 film can cluster" method. I think the Frogs find that 3 cans grouped close together presents a more secure site than say, a single lone film can. Got more than a few other froggers that swear by this.

Some people think film cans "look bad"....but I cannot even see the black ones, even if they are in the front of the viv and I have OCD ! I think even the white one's look cool in a viv. Not natural but not really....un-natural either. Meh

For my Vanzo Viv...I have 3 cans on the upper right and 3 cans on the upper left. Then I can 2 more on the ground on both sides as well. oh...black on one side and white on the other. That's probably me overdoing it, as usual, but hey.... 8)

Mack 'I'm a beginner, so a couple of out of the box thoughts:

1. Can you feed less fruit flies but more often, so they aren't hanging around after feed time (escaping the frogs) ?

2. Feed springtails and isopods instead of fruit flies, hence removing the problems of feeder insects at source ?
