Do coloured film cans matter ? Do the frogs care ?

Do certain species seem to prefer white over black or vice versa ?

Black coloured cans are harder to get. They are Kodak and Kodak film is one of the most expensive brands - hence the scarcity.

If I have that wrong, and someone is a big film buff, please let me know.

I wonder why some frogs would prefer clear/white filmcans? It would seem logical to deposit in something that would obscure the eggs/tads from view (predators, other frogs) than something that allows some light transmission. Especially since tads in the eggs have a strong response to light (i.e. they want to avoid it). I lucked out and got a bunch of black filmcans locally but I have some white ones too...maybe I'll throw a white one in with the anthonyi and see what happens.

I dunno....for that single instance of imi's not using the white...I've heard 10 more where they only use the white.

I know this is an old thread , but just figured I would throw my observations in. My imis will use the black over the white. They will use the white but not until the blacks are taken.

Most frogs will prefer indigenous in situ plants like dieffenbachia. Then plants like broms, next film cans and other garbage they find.
What's important to understand is they may have a preference when given a choice, but those choices do not prompt or stimulate breeding. They are just as horny with a plant or garbage in-viv.

Do you use diffenbachia Rich? I have always avoided it because of the irritating sap...had a bad experience with some Polypedates dennysi snapping stems and getting covered in sap. I guess most darts aren't heavy enough to break the stems though.

Dart Frogs Etc/Sam Cavoulas sells black or white film cans 10c each. I just got 10 of each.

I keep both kinds in 5 pairs of imitator vivs. Very rarely do I find eggs or tads in white film cans, they usually use the black ones. These days, I mostly chop up the white ones to use as "liners" to the black ones to slide out eggs more easily.

Saw the Rich - Craig info exchange about groups, or better yet, cluster of multiple film cans. I too believe this is a great idea and that most frogs would feel more secure in choosing a film can if it was surrounded in a group of say, 4-6 ,like a bouquet.

I used to suction cup 3-6 cans in a staggered row on the glass sides of my Ranitomeya species vivariums and that seemed to work, but in the future, I'll get more of a 'mass' or clump of them to include some nearer to the viv floor.

you can delete if you wish not film can mention. my intermedius breed steady in pill containers. the amber colored ones.
