Establishing "Frog Credibility" in the Dart Frog Hobby

Im just saying because you are not active on the interwebs does not mean you are not to be trusted. Then again I would not trust anyone with 3 posts and goes by froggystyle69.

There are plenty of reputable people who do not want to be involved with the antics of forums, hassle or websites, ect.

Agreed, but most of these people established themselves by activity on forums at one point or another. Aside from the downsides of forums, some simply do no have the time. I know some days its a struggle just getting into my frogroom to mist/feed. I can't imagine how much more difficult it becomes with kids.

I can attest to being busy. Vacation, family care, tending 15 vivs, working lots of overtime at day job sure takes a toll. I cant imagine having 30+ vivs and making 20 cultures a week etc...

I've got 49 posts after a few years and maybe 500 on Dendroboard over close to 10 years. Not that many - so how's my frog cred? Posting on boards isn't a good way to figure these things out. People lie, people boast, people don't boast. The best way to judge people you can't meet is to call them, repeatedly. Far better is to meet them in person.

What's the big deal about Cred anyway. We keep the frogs because we enjoy doing it. We share with like minded people.

Best,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

I get the fact the you are not a big internet guy and poster. You once told me that you have a hard time typing and composing. I don't think anyone will ever hold that against you in any shape or form - at least I truly hope not.

I think you have some misplaced negativity towards the forums due in part to your inability to participate. As you say, Forums are not for everybody. But as to your statement about not being able to judge people by their posts on a forum...I can't think of much of anything that can be more wrong than your theory on forums. The Forums allow us to more effectively sort people out. I grew up in the 80's, before Al Gore invented the internet. I remember writing letters to hobbyists about animals.I can't physically meet people from coast to coast but I'm an excellent judge of character and these forums - Fauna Classifieds, BOI ect are ALL that I need to make up my mind. I trust them very close to 100%...and rely on them over most people.

In the end...'Cred" is not...as you say....much of any kind of 'big Deal". It's only what you make of it or put into it. You and I MAY keep frogs because WE like them, but the Forums have shown me that all hobbyists are not like us. There are several 'hobbyists" / businessmen that only keep frogs to make $$ from them. Some of them I will never meet in person, nor would I like to sully myself with speaking to them on the phone. The forums and the intangible 'Cred" is what I value....what allows me to effectively make my mind up about someone or something. Nothing is perfect, but do I trust in the forums and the information provided herein ? Yes, I do.

For what it's worth...

Since being in the dart frog hobby I've only made four sales on a forum. Not this forum, but one of the others. All four of the people I made the sales to had less than 10 posts so I was apprehensive about selling to them. Two of them joined the forum just to buy my frogs. After doing some research on them and doing as much data-mining as I could, I found out that each of these four people had been keeping dart frog's for years. One of them nearly twelve years.

These are examples of people who have experience but don't socialize on the forums. I myself have taken chances and bought frogs from people who have very little posts on a forum. I never had a bad experience other than some of the frogs were younger/smaller than what I was expecting.

I think the point I'm trying to make is that there are a lot of experienced people raising dart frogs who aren't known in the community. Chuck P. is right though, the best thing is to meet someone face to face and get to know them personally. JJuchems also nailed it in saying that some people don't want to be involved with the shenanigans that go on in forums. I decided recently to try and meet people in my general area but I'll have to wait till the weather gets better.

I'm so unknown that I've actually offered frogs for free and only asked for the cost of shipping and the people wouldn't take it.
