Quarantining?
#1
From what I can gather, it is a good practice to quarantine any new frogs, even if they are your first, for the purpose of not infecting the viv.

I see that the norm seems to be using the 190 oz "deli" containers. And I don't have a finger on the time span, but it sounds like a month or better? I remember reading - fecal tests, then a certain period, and do the tests again. I don't remember if it repeats again or if that is only with a positive result.

How common is it for a CB to have a parasitic load (assuming they came from a reputable breeder)?

Anyway, I am wondering if it is against veteran wisdom to build & establish the viv. (plants, microfauna) while having the frogs in the quarantine process?

I don't want it to sound like I'm trying to find a fast way to get frogs, and rush it. The reason I'm wondering is because if I come across that perfect little one(s) will it be ok? (I don't expect to, but the unexpected happens sometimes.)

Building a viv first, before frogs, is ALWAYS good. it's 100% better to build a viv and learn to culture flies first - 90% of people buy animals on impulse and do it the other way around (incorrectly).

I refer to 190 oz containers as "heart attack tubs". When you struggle with the lid and it finally pops of and makes a loud noise, you'll understand why....

ANY plastic tub, container or bin makes an ideal Q-tine enclosure, as it can be sterilized a little easier than glass. But even a 10 gallon fish tank would be ok. The type of container is not as important as what you do with it.

I think the Q-tine sticky here is pretty tight and addresses all your concerns. Feel free to post directly onto the sticky or another thread. It's actually easier that way and keeps all the info in fewer places.

"Parasitic load" is a kind of broad term. Frogs, as with all animals, have some organisms in their system, specifically their gut. There are even a number of species that fall under the category of Parasite that have a symbiotic or commensal relationship and removing these animals from the frog will actually harm the frog. This is why we avoid "shotgunning" treatments or prophylactic treatments. Some do more harm than good.

That said, it is always recommended to consult a Vet with Amphibian experience if you so desire. CB animals may contain a high load of hookworms for instance, just like a WC animal. A good Vet can recommend treatments or no treatments, based on the fresh fecal examinations.

Lisa, from reading your posts and being around hundreds of hobbyists....you strike me as more responsible than average and are def doing the right thing by reading, learning and taking your time. Kudos to you.

Ack! I think the heart attack would be more from the coming of suddenly, than a loud noise! I'd be terrified the froggy would go flying! Confusedhock:

Thanks I'll find that sticky!

I have located an exotic vet not too far away, that lists amphibians. Now I just need to find out how if he is considered good with them before deciding to use him.

Theres a long time hobbyist up your way that just started practice as a Vet....Rob Ozbadoff (I think I got the spelling right). Ask your Vet if he has contact info for Rob. Rob will help you greatly with all things dart frog related, I'm sure.
