Poll - What kind of Forum do you like ?
#21
Said so succinctly, and I couldn't agree more. I am guilty of lashing out on a forum on occasion, but I'd like to think I usually take the high road. I don't like indirect, sarcastic insults because they seem to fester and breed more of the same. Seems to create a circle jerk of rudeness, i.e. "venom and hate". It is possible to discuss sensitive topics without insulting the other person, but it doesn't seem to happen that way on the internet. If a post seems likes it's inflammatory, I try to imagine it being said aloud with different tones. Most posts past that test, the ones that don't... well there's the rub. Wink

Well, the interweb cannot be 100% sanitized. There's always going to be a little snark and some innuendo. No one here gets bullied or attacked. The closest thing to a 'war' we have on this particular forum was the Rich Vs. Sidney thing and even THAT was both parties having at it based on a mutual dislike.

To say that the forums contain 'venom and hate' is absurd and ignorant.

That would make me absurd and ignorant

Some people don't want to have a thick skin, just gain and share knowledge.

If the shoe fits....no really,...again...let's have some examples of your idea of 'venom and Hate' that occurred here. I just don't see it. Snark. Yes. Some condescending remarks. Yes. But even those are few a far between and usually only occur between two 'willing combatants".

There's another 'fluffy' place where nothing 'bad' is allowed to be said. I like this place better.

I was mostly talking in general, not specific to this forum. I don't really know much about the issue with Rich and Sydney, but if it was a direct confrontation between two people like you said, I wouldn't interpret that as being "venom and hate". They were just airing their issues in the open, and it's up to them to decide if it's appropriate. I do think we could all make a bit of an effort to communicate better online, but that's just my opinion. It's hard enough for people to understand each other in person, much less when many of the social queues we've learned are not available. I have posted things in the past where people made broad assumptions about what I was implying, instead of taking it to be exactly as I had wrote. I've done the same to other people. Just sharing some of the observations I've made growing up in this digital age, and what I try to do to keep myself more civil.

You're turning it into a debate. I stated my opinion, that's it.
No desire to debate, please continue without me.

Not so much of a debate as me trying to understand what you are referring too. I honestly have no idea.

So....Does ED bring forth 'Venom" and/or 'Hate" ? Does one need a thick skin to engage ED in a thread ?

Some questions...

No so much hate as condescending.

Someone that just brought home a frog from the neighborhood pet store doesn't need 15 pages and 25 links to pathogen posts..... He ANNIHILATES the beginner section....

Some thoughts......

"We can't have transparency on our forum because it would take too long to explain / talk about it" ?

Really ???

"We don't want anything negative on the forum because 'what's the use of it" ?? "It doesn't serve any purpose or make the forum better"

REALLY ???

Is it the 'Twilight Zone' over there ?

Sorry - could not resist Smile I don't understand the desire to erase the history of discussions about people or companies who have been ripped off. For entrants into the hobby this kind of information is essential, otherwise we just keep bad sellers around preying on the new guys.

The control of hobby information placed in the hands of a few that are "in the know" is maddening. This needs to be out in the open, for all to see. Obviously there is a concern, and the community is trying to address it. But every few days someone hits the button, and poof, the history is gone (but infractions remain)...but not on DD. The feedback threads were truly valuable to me when entering the hobby.

The community has split with two forums using two very different approaches. Know the communities, know what they stand for. Contribute where you can. You can tell by my post counts where I have chosen to focus my contribution.

The only thing I can possibly come up with, is that a squeaky clean forum without a hint of any "bad" or negative threads is:

Easier and more lucrative...

To Sell.

Not to mention an injustice to the hobby it allegedly serves.

Yeah, his replies are always "too long too explain","you all don't understand", "old news", "factless" ... as if we're all dumb as a brick.

If he would just come out and say that it's not in his best interest, i could respect that somewhat. At least for it's honesty.

The more he replies the shadier he looks.

I'm surprised he hasn't given me an "infraction" for my most recent comment.

My biggest problem is that there are a lot of good people "over there" that for one reason or another won't come over here. So, I won't completely abandon it.

there's a bit of confirmation bias there, being that the people who do not like the contentious nature of this forum are not really active here, anymore.

While I like that hot topics can be openly discussed here, there is lots of bullshit that the forum could likely do without, while achieving the same goals

I agree that some of the debates can degrade into less valuable posts, but for me, I'd rather be the one making decisions on what information is relevant to the hobby than a select few who's views on "what is relevant" versus "what is a waste of time" may not align with mine. I have found the use of the "foes" feature helpful to block users who have routinely submitted posts of little value in my opinion, but I would prefer to be allowed to exercise my own judgement. I guess that is the core issue for me - it drives me nuts when work product, good or bad, is deleted, or at least intentionally hidden from me. Give me all the data and allow me to make an informed decision for myself.

I also appreciate your posts and the fact that you are willing to raise points that may not align with the core DD posters. That is what I think is great - there is dissent that is discussed in the open and debated, not deleted.

The point I found hilarious on the thread on DB is that everyone of the Mods that posted said something negative about DD. One even went as far to say " I would rather go without than go over there"

I prefer this forum but DB has a lot of really good information. Mods shouldn't be speaking ill of other sources of information.
The simple answer to this is the mods don't like DD because they have no power here. So they openly speak how horrible DD is.

True, but I'd rather sift through the BS and get the information that I want. It's far better than no information at all...I'm very good at skimming posts I have no interest in or that don't provide me with any info.
