NEW subforum on local "Pet Stores"
#1
I've been thinking of adding this sub-forum for a while now, as I feel it's really important to the hobby. Please post up your local retail (brick and mortar) businesses that stock and carry Dart Frogs and related specific supplies - feeders, supplements, that type of stuff. This is valuable to people that need emergency supplies and are either not close to other froggers or unwilling to meet new people.

This subforum also goes along with my current idea to issue praise and good reviews to those worthy. If a physical business is doing a good job with it's livestock and supplies it really should be rewarded with some exposure and a thread here will go towards that.

Remember....support your local fellow froggers and breeders....AND your local pet stores, if they provide excellent service.

wow, what a shame this idea wasn't better received. In this horrible economy, it sure would help to support the small retail stores if they are excellent. I hope it's not that there are NO good stores providing dart frogs and supplies, but the alternative, that everyone is too lazy to be bothered to type a thread, is equally troubling.

In San Diego there is pet kingdom and lllreptile , lll usually has the needed bugs, pet kingdom sometimes. At least that's my experience, I prefer Ill. I would imagine other local places have supplies as well but haven't checked. Ill seems to be priced better overall. Not terribly excited about either of my options but they work...

Pretty sure this is in wrong spot but hey "A" for effort right

Very little around these parts, at least that I've seen.

I don't have any local shops around my area that are worth mentioning... We used to have a killer reptile shop that I watched go from an amazing specialty shop with prize winning vivariums on display to basically a reptile supply shop with mediocre animals. I'm sure the economy played a huge role in the downfall of Tribal Reptile Co. who shut their doors and closed the business less than a year ago.

Stan and I have gone far and wide, in search of a great local mom'n'pop pet store. Can't find one, at least not near these boondocks we live in! A month or two ago we were really stoked, thought we found one. I found it online, friended it on facebook, and it really looked like an exciting possibility! On the website they talk about all the wonderful exotic pets they have, and it sounded great. We finally took a day trip there (it's about a 2 hr drive). It's named Exotic Critter Corner, in Maquoketa, Iowa. The name was promising, right?! We walked in, and the fronts of the cages are so dirty you can't see the birds/other critters very well. Stan walked into the back room, lots of fish, LOTS of salt water, and corals, which is cool. I was perusing the large front room, with the small critters, and noticed on the ground, under the tanks with hamsters/gerbils, etc, there was a space under the tanks maybe 4-5 inches tall. There was a HUGE snake, a boa constrictor, under the tanks. Obviously didn't belong there, so I was watching him. He was trying to capture the hamsters/gerbils, etc, from under their tanks! This snake was bigger around than my thigh, he had to be at least 10 feet long! The owner walked by, and I told him, "I think there's a problem here", and showed him the snake. He freaked out, and ran to the back room, and tried to capture this constrictor. Meanwhile, Stan came back and told me the fish room was sad--dead and dying fish. Nice corals, though! Anyway, I showed him the huge snake issue, after a minute he looked up to the eye level tank and said--that guinea pig is dead! The top level tanks didn't have lids! Evidently, the constrictor had gotten loose the day before, and climbed up and constricted the poor guinea pig to death before he went down below to the lower tanks. I stood there and watched for quite a while, as the owner tried to capture the constrictor with a wire-type-thing, with no luck. We left this store SOOOO fast! Ugh!
The local Petco and Petsmart (in Dubuque) have feeder crickets, calci-worms (sometimes), fruit flies (in those skinny vials, but OK in a pinch!) and tank sales a couple times a year. I can buy dog and cat food and treats. Gravel and water plants for my tanks. Water purifier. Their fish pretty much suck, but....I have never walked in to witness a loose boa constrictor killing the pets and being on the loose, without anyone noticing! Ugh, that was horrible!

Pets and Things- Shelby Township, Mi. Just moved to new location. Great shop. Always has fresh robust FF cultures available. Decent selection of dart frogs along with all other types of reptiles. Animals well cared for. Shop there frequently and never disappointed.

Hoffers in Milwaukee WI has fruit fly cultures, and ridiculously priced dart frogs, Actually a really cool place to visit. Caiman pool, sulcata garden, vast reptile selection. But overpriced none the less.

This store is about 40 minutes east of me. I have to get out there one of these days just to check them out. They have Darts and Mantellas and the video showed a Leuc viv

Just checked out the website. I only looked at the amphibian section but I noticed next to the dart frogs the owner had CB (captive bread). So I would be careful if buy any of the other amphibians, not sure if they are wild caught or not. So just remember to always do your research and ask question! Smile
