Hello everyone,
Well I am finally going to do it. I have always wanted to get Dart Frogs but something always came up.Then I took a trip to the Amazon and seen some in the wild and that was it. Been thinking about them all the time now.

Going to get into it slowly so that everything is perfect for them when I decide which kind to get,so I will be asking a lot of stupid questions so my apologies now Tongue .

Welcome, Boss Frog!
Glad you have found this site--it is a very helpful place, you'll find everything you need here! I have been here less than a year, have 4 different breeds and love it more every day! My imi's are reproducing, so exciting--I have 2 newly morphed froglets this past month.
You are so lucky to have seen PDFs in the wild-cool!
Are you in the US? If you add your location to your profile it will be helpful--if you have other members within driving distance, you can get help/supplies/frogs safer/cheaper/easier than if things need to be shipped through the mail. It's also really cool to be able to visit a nearby frogger to see his/her setup, especially when you're first getting started.
Are you thinking large frogs, small frogs??? Green, blue, yellow, red?? Any ideas yet??
Welcome!

Welcome! Got any frog photos from your trip? Smile I've been on DD for less than a year. Lots of great discussions and advice.

Hey Boss Frog,
Love that name!! lol, Welcome to Dart Den. You're taking a great approach in learning all you can about housing and husbandry before jumping in with your first frogs. There are lots of great people here to help answer any and all questions you might have. I wish you the best of luck and if you need any help, please feel free to ask questions.

Thinking of blue frogs but not really sure yet. Right now focusing on making sure everything is just right with tank before I even start looking at frogs.

Sounds like you are going about this in the correct manner--good for you! I also read and researched a lot before buying frogs. It's the best way, IMO!
Are you working on a tank already? If so, you should know that all frogs aren't great for all tanks. For instance, blue frogs, Azureus. If you are considering these for your first, they will like a big footprint. So length and depth is more important than height. If you are thinking about thumbnails, most of those need height, not so much footprint. Just an FYI, in case you weren't aware.
Glad you posted your location, it will help! There are a few I can think of on here from Ohio, not sure how far away. I know there are lots of shows in Columbus, not sure how far you are from there?
Good luck and have fun! This site is very helpful if you have questions, people will give you their best advice!

Actually, this is a big misconception.
The bigger the footprint the better for all darts. This is where the micro fauna and leaf litter live. The fact that thumbs are a little more arboreal makes no difference to the frog itself in a little box which is professed either 'ground dwelling' or 'arboreal', simply depending on how it is oriented, not built pertaining to a true jungle set-up. Turn a 36" x 16" x 18" horizontal on it's end making it 'arboreal' and you just lost 50% of your substrate area , and 50% of the most beneficial area in the tank. Every frog benefits from more footprint.
Every thumb I have worked with (only have a few groups of Highland lamasi left right now) does just fine with about 16" of 'head room'.

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.
