Recently got into the hobby
#1
Hello Dart Den.

My name is Chris and I have recently got into the hobby. I have been reading DartDen, Dendroboard, and Frogforum websites to find out as much info of Dart Frogs as I can to better my chances of being over prepared rather than under prepared. I have studied the basics on how to take care of Dart Frogs with their tank parameters, food, vitamins, not mixing species, 1 frog per 10 gallon, day and night cycle, what type of material to use for tank setup and the use of false bottom or Hydroton or LECA with screen mesh to seperate soil and false bottom or Hydroton/Leca to prevent water logged soil. I was wondering if you can use Weed Block instead of screen material. Is False Bottom so much more superior to Hydroton/LECA that its worth the extra effort for construction (I do not plan on water feature and weight doesnt bother me too much)

I have some questions about species and currently I have narrowed my search to a couple species, but have questions about them. If you could please help me out by labeling each species on a Hardiness meter of 1-10. 1 being most sensitive and 10 being most hardy.

1. P Terribilis. I love how they are bold and you can keep them in groups. I understand they are the most heat sensitive and quite possibly more illness prone compared to Tincs, but they are labeled as Novice species due to their more expansive food diet, but they appear to be Intermediate species due to heat sensitivity, fungus and/or bacterial infection, and their tank conditions prefer humid, but not too wet habitat. I can deal with the heat with a room AC Unit, but fungus/bacterial and this wet foot syndrome issues they have seem to point towards borderline paranoid tank check ups. I would love to hear from someone who has experience with P. Terribilis on how they deal with heat, fungus/bacterial, other misc illness related information on P.Terribilis.

2. D. Tinc. Azureus. I love their colors and hardiness. I understand you can have possibly a 2:2 M/F ratio and even still can trigger egg eating, female fighting behavior. I have multiple tanks availible, but would prefer not have to a bunch of 29 gallon tanks all over the place. I love Azureus, but i dont like how their species seems designed to out compete each other. Even as tadpoles they release growth inhibiting hormones and cannibalism! I would love to hear from D. Tinc, Azureus keepers how they deal with a trio that consists of both types of trios 2:1 M/F and 1:2 M/F.

I have multiple tanks available from having fish in the past and I have 1x 40 gallon breeder, 1x 40 gallon long, 1x 29 gallon tall, and 1x 20 gallon tall tanks. I can seperate frogs if needed. I also plan to put my light timer on reverse so our Daytime is the frogs nighttime and vice versa. Would a black sheet covering the tank be enough for the frogs to think its sleepy time (~.~)::z::Z::z::

If you have any other pointers, advise, anything that can help me out even if its completely off the subject, but appropriate to the topics of Dart Frogs please let me know, thank you!

A false bottom is very simple. I use a flat piece of egg crate with film canisters or deli cups under it. Takes two seconds. Screen is better than weed block in my opinion because it is more permeable and will retain less moisture. Ive kept plenty of Tincs but not terribilis, but Tincs are all great beginner frogs. Just start with a couple froglets, or a pair. No need for a group.

Thank you KGB. Great advice, especially the false bottom advice.

Welcome to Dart Den Chris !

It seems like you have done a lot of research already - VERY nice !

Best advice I have is to start on a 'smaller scale' - pairs or trio of frogs and not large groups right away. The social dynamic of these fascinating creatures is sometimes very hard to read, especially when new. Stress is often a silent 'killer' as well. Things go a little easier with pairs or trios of Tincs - 1.1 or 2.1

Reverse photoperiods - not a problem either. You could certainly throw a black cloth over the top to keep them 'honest' .lol

Thank you very much Philsuma. I have been reading other posts and your posts and replies to questions have been most helpful. I have learned a lot about Dart frog care and identifying key issues you mentioned in some of your previous posts

Mainly, they will be fine anywhere in your house you put them, except for in direct sunlight. The viv is just like a green house, it will get hot really fast if the sun is on it, so right in front of a window is not a good place. The same thing in the winter, if you put them by the door you come into or go out of a lot, they can get too cold.
