Classified Ad Policy here on Dart Den.
#1
1. Effective immediately, Dart Den.com reserves the right to delete or disallow any advertisement (sale, wanted or trade) placed on DD for any reason. No notice or reason needs to be given.

2. Any advertisement must include realistic information as to where the frogs came from. It can be importer or failing that knowledge, then it must be someone named - last owner.

There will not be another post of 'unknown or unnamed breeder or origin".

I'm also conSIDering implementing one of those 'you must have posted 25 posts before being able to ride this ride' type of things too for the classifieds. Thinking....

It would be interesting to see if you could tie classified posting to the "been thanked" count. Nothing high, but something tied to contributions / acknowledgement by other members.

The already shady characters will simply put a name to their unknown breeder frogs to bypass this rule and those on the fence may be persuaded to do so just to sell their frogs. I'd much rather keep the truth option available to the honest people in the hobby. I'd rather buy an unknown frog from someone then any frogs from a known shady character.

You have my vote for the 25 post minimum. I'll take it a step further and say 35... Even 50.

Why implement this? This board is pretty well versed in smelling out rats and ...I just realized the rest of this conversation needs to be had over PM.

I also vote for 25 posts. Makes it more difficult for rats to push frogs. Also encourages participation and interaction w the online community. One of many ways to get skin in the game.

25 min. Posts just leads to more useless... "Nice pic, cool, great frogs, awesome, wow, didn't know that, way to go.... Etc."

Not really posts of any consequence. Reviewing ads seems fine. Better yet... Buyer beware. Know what you are buying and who you are buying from.

While I like the idea - I think you will be encouraging some people to just make something up. Some have been doing it for a long time to boost sales and profits... And how about frogs that were purchased at a local show? Listing "LLL" as the previous owner doesn't add much to the conversation. I get a fair number of people that come to our booth and when I ask if they have any frogs at home I get "Yeah, I have a blue one and a green one I got off craigslist".

Personally, I would rather see someone list "LLL" or "some dude on Craigslist" to their listing so I know where they came from rather than just have them make something up to have a recognized name.

Like I say, I embrace the idea - I'm just not sure how you execute effectively...

Yes, this is def not easy. Everyone mentioned the obvious (and correct) limitations. I think the blanket statement saying DD 'can' disallow or remove any ad for any reason is the 'sweet spot" for temporary fixes right now. Thanks everyone, for adding opinions to this issue. I'm always looking to reach the best 'community" solution.

Anybody who doubts the info given can simply demand info via the FOIA.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

If tone is more important to you than content, you are at the wrong place.

25 posts and at least one thanks from a useful post. There are also other ways to weed out obvious users.
This undoubtedly is a more close knit , if not scrapping at times, club.
If we want people who are obviously USING the site for nothing but commercial gain, then I have a big misreading about DD.

The Banner ads are not paying my Lexus payments, and never will, if that's what you mean Rich. lol. When Patrick Nabors flat out told me he wouldn't PAY for advertising here because basically, these forums are undercutting him...I pretty much ruled out getting rich running this site.

I basically just wanted to throw up a big slam-bang announcement RE-stating what's basically in the TOS anyway - that any ad can be taken down for any reason. Just so everyone is reminded. Another example is your own local frogger Matt O. who has recently been 'elevated' to the exalted ranks of 'WARNING" in the vendor subforum for non-delivery of goods / feeder insects for more than just a few different people. He is banned on DB and he made an additional SN here and threw up a large 'for sale' ad which I quickly removed. There may be 1-2 other people that are 'on the radar' that could fall into the category of still being able to post, but NOT being able to put up sale ads. Chris T. could not place sale ads for about a year as well. This is what we are getting at here.

I have no idea what your costs are Phil and have no idea what you may or may not charge for any ads here at all. That was not my point.
My point was that if you want users , be they honest or not, then keep things as they are. I see people on all the boards who never post anything but "FOR SALE". Those are called users. Not contributors. You have some here...
If you want interaction, then 25 posts and a thanks before they step up and peddle their stuff.

Ah, business vs Hobby is raising it's ugly head.

Dart Den is a HOBBY website first and foremost. The banner ad revenue generated here is so minimal...well, lets just leave it at that -minimal. It's enough to 'keep the lights on' and has been that way when Corey started in in 2004. I like it that way as well.

Dart Den is a Hobby website FOR the hobby (hobbyists).

If Reptile show people are bent out of shape about perceived lost revenue ect, then they need to police their SHOWs...their TABLES...their VENDORS and stop worrying about what they cannot control - websites.

Advertising is fairly straight forward. Banner ads = people seeing them. There is no 'competition' in the equation. Either you want to pay for advertising or not. Black and White. No need to grouse about other stuff and hobbyists posting hobby frogs for sale or trade.

I guess a reasonable alternative for DB would be to close ALL classifieds except for paying sponsors. Heck it may work just fine and only show a small dip in attendance and traffic.

We won't do that here though. Dart Den will stay a hobby forum.

Sponsors pay for a banner ad

A Banner ad = MUCH more visibility that a classified ad that will eventually get buried and hardly ever seen.

I dunno bout DB, but here on DD, the Banner ad prices are very reasonable, I feel. Very fair value IMO.

another perk of the Sponsor is that the Forum recognizes them for being representative and GOOD for the hobby. The reverse is when you see Sponsorship removed and you all can probably guess the two different sponsors here on DD that are no longer....here.

Sponsors trying to 'have a bigger say' in things and Mods quashing bad feedback for certain ones goes back 6-8 years at least. Whether it's still done to this day 'over there', I don't know, but seeing some of the comments and posts makes me think that it is.

I'm quite sure it still happens "over there". In fact there's a poll right now going where a mod made a claim that the mods don't protect the sponsors to which I responded, "well where is the sponsor's vendor feedback section?" Still haven't gotten a response yet but I'm sure it will be deleted shortly... I've had some bad experiences with at least one of the sponsors there, on several occasions actually, and have yet to see a place where I can leave negative feedback for that sponsor.

Leave feed back here. If some sponsor did you wrong, let the hobby know.
