Is mixing Phyllobates terribilis Morphs ok ??

I know it's frowned upon to mix dart frog morphs, such as tinc Azureus with tinc Cobalt, for fear of creating hybrids that may get mixed into the hobby labeled as pure morphs.

But what about Phyllobates terribilis? The three "morphs:" mint, yellow, and orange; can they be kept together?

On a side note, what's the best way to NOT end up with babies with dart frogs? Obviously have two mes or two females, but if you end up with a pair, what do you do?

Same concerns as with mixing ANY species of Dart Frogs - we lose the genetics and potentially hurt the hobby if the frogs are misrepresented or unethically released.

of course different morphs /populations / 'colours' CAN be kept together. I CAN keep any given Dog and Cat 'together' in the same house as well. I CAN probably toss a baseball into the air and catch it squarely on my chin without using my hands. A lot of 'CAN' but also a lot of 'probably should not'.

To not 'end up' with 'babies' ?

1. 2 males only

2. Cull (remove and freeze) all found eggs

Just out of curiosity, why do you wish (reasons) to have an enclosure with 2 or more different morphs of frogs ?

I've kept mixed tanks for well over a decade now. If you do not want baby frogs simply cull the eggs. If you end up with babies enjoy them and/or be responsible when people ask about them. Other then that, do your research.

I think both mint and yellow terribilis are very beautiful and would love to be able to keep one of each if it were possible.

When can you for sure sex terribilis? I know physically the two genders are very similar, but how can you sex them? Can you show them a photo of a female and see if they call?

Also, how many babies do they have per clutch, and how often? And I would rather give away one kf my frogs than tk be so irresponsible as to keep killing their eggs.

Humans have babies...frogs have 'froglets'

Culling or freezing eggs is very RESPONSIBLE, not to mention humane. Nuttin' wrong with that.

Terribilis sometimes take 2 years to sexually mature and/or be able to be sexed thru calling or egg laying.

If someone was to offer a sexed Terribilis for sale, I'd say offhand it would cost @ $200.00 - rough estimate with variables. Maybe even more $$$.

Only way to sex them:

1. Let them mature and see if someone calls
2. Let them mature and see if someone lays eggs

PLEASE don't take this the wrong way. I am not picking on you, but please elaborate as to why you want 2 different colors?

Isn't one color pretty enough?

Just trying to get a new hobbyists take on selection.

As an alternative, three 18x18x24 vivs side by side by side with each morph housed separately would be quite striking.

That's what I was going to say! You CAN have both mint and yellow terribilis, just not together in the same viv. Frogs aren't like people, they don't necessarily need or want companionship--and viv building, by itself, is really fun! So build 2 vivs, have 1 frog in each, and you can happily watch your frogs without worrying about reproduction!

Side by side vivariums ,or one large vivarium with dividers set up to look continuous makes a stunning display.
