I.A.D - International Amphibian Day brought back ?
#1
The last IAD was 2007 in Timonium Maryland - just above Baltimore. It was a success, IMO, but due to infighting and bickering, died that same year.

I'm thinking it should be brought back and would be willing to help make that happen.

Baltimore is a PERFECT venue. Big city with lots of great access. Sight seeing - Inner Harbour, historic, Edgar Allen Poe, Civil war stuff and the BIG one.....wait for it.....the National Aquarium ! The Aquarium is almost single handedly responsible for a huge chunk of the East Coast Dart Frog hobby , due to it's excellent frog exhibits - and they are still there. Atelopus, Tree frogs, Dart frogs. There was also a behind the scenes tour that always had 20-30 people attend. You got to see behind all the exhibits, frog breeding, temp tanks, storage, overflow, feeding, ect. You also got to go into the top rain forest are and field herp ! That's right, you and the other attendees (with staff supervision) were able to FLIP ROCKS and LOGS and find all the cool frogs and toads that are breeding and running wild in the rain forest. Huge smooth sided toads.....tons of tiny tri colors calling away and scooting around everywhere. Tadpoles in the water features.

The IAD hotel was awesome too. Large restaurant and indoor bar. Plenty of large conference rooms for vending and lectures. Not as pretty as Snug Harbour, but much more serviceable IMO.

More later....

Had 2 PM's asking...."Why Maryland and why not NY or NJ" ?

NY and NJ have a bunch of really restrictive animal laws and selling laws, so I'm told. Vendors must report earnings, taxes - scary things like that. Jersey is really bad I hear. Just about everything is illegal there.heh

I think, for a big Frog venure to succeed, you have to have:

1. A big Urban city venue that's near major transit and withing 1-3 hours of other major citys ect. So Philly, DC and Baltimore would see to fit that bill.

2. A major draw, like a museum, Zoological institution ect. Baltimore Aquarium. Philadephia Zoo, Smithsonian all come to mind.

3. Extras, cultural , historic, sightseeing. Again ,I'm going to have to think that Philly, Baltimore (inner harbour) and DC have all that going on.

I'm hearing some talk about bringing this back.

One thing that I feel strongly about, is that we have a recurring venue. As soon as you have a nice show with a niche hobby such as ours, and then miss a year or god forbid, 2 years...then you have to almost literally start over advertiement and marketing wise.

We need to have multiple show locations on BOTH coasts and in the middle always, at least once a year in all places.

Would love to see IAD come back......I think having the show at the hotel really helped make the night before more fun.

Indeed Greg. Matt M did a BANG UP job....but....the hotel should be more "full-service" like the old IAD one, right ?

We are thinking of dusting her off and bringing her back.

I feel the important thing about the hobby, is that momentum be maintained. We cannot hope to grow without a yearly show in the same/nearby location. If we miss a year, people forget, lose interest and then we have to almost literally start over.

That would be awesome if you did. Yeah I remember staying in the hotel bar area until 2 or 3 in the morning at the last IAD.

Who would be the hot speakers to see at a show like this? Who would everyone want to see?

I am interested to know who the big names in frogging are?

Phil,
No answering!

IAD was a traditional Spring season show right? The old MARs show at the fairgrounds was a Summer show? Do I have that right?
