Customs in North Rhine-Westphalia has confiscated more than a hundred suspected illegally smuggled arrow poison frogs. The animals were brought from Slovakia to Hamm, the Customs Investigation Office in Essen announced.

According to this, an amphibian trader from Slovakia wanted to hand over the ordered frogs to customers. According to the communication, the market value of the animals is about 25,000 euros.

A 35-year-old courier was found in a hotel room, Customs wrote. During the search, 108 frogs from Panama were discovered. There is a suspicion that these are so-called wild catches which have been taken illegally from nature.

Four other frogs of a genus that has never been officially introduced into the European Union have also been discovered. All animals found are considered to be particularly endangered. According to customs information, the woman was unable to present valid import and origin permits. The frogs were temporarily housed in a zoo in North Rhine-Westphalia.
