Can Dart Frogs be kept in a Greenhouse ?
#21
Geckguy,

Do you have any pics of your greenhouse? I was wondering how well darts are at crawling over acrylic with a 90 degree piece on the top, something like an inverted L . When I get the time I plan on experimenting with different types of barriers.

DartFrog Wrote:Yea I think you could make it work but it will need some planning. I would like to find a way to keep the frogs in a certain area of the greenhouse. I dont know how to do that with out a cage.

Interesting thread... I don't know that I would ever try darts in my greenhouse. It is just too big, and while I don't like to spray insecticides, in a plant collection as big as mine sometimes I just have to. And I fertilize constantly. That has to be bad for dart frogs...

However, there are frogs that are resistant... I've heard that coqui frogs are impossible to get rid of, and are actually a nuisance in tropical areas. I'm confident they wouldn't survive a winter (or a spring) up here, though. Is it possible to buy coqui frogs? If I did, could I still send plants to tropical climates (do they lay eggs in plants)? Is it stupid to even think about these frogs when there might be better options?

I'm still confused about greenhouse frogs... Looking for good options. Whites Tree frog was suggested in another thread. Anybody have any other good ideas? Mantellas, maybe?
Why yes, I do have orchids you could grow in a vivarium... *grin*

My greenhouses are basically screened in boxes. They are made for dart frogs, and they have full run of them so no wall is needed to keep them in a certain spot.

There is a reason they try to get rid of coqui frogs, they have a very loud call, around 80 decibels. I am sure your neighbors wouldn't appreciate a group of them calling through the night. If you spray you greenhouse with fertilizer or pesticides DONT add frogs. There is no reason to have frogs in your greenhouse, I made special greenhouses which will house hard to breed eggfeeders that need lots of space.

What do you mean screened boxes? Do you have more then one in your green house? Do you have any pics?

Thanks

I made a frame using 4" x 4"s, and screened it in with heavy duty shade cloth. It is basically a larger version of a reptarium. They are not finished yet, they still need plants, leaf litter, and doors. They are built under a large oak tree for extra shade to keep the temp down in our hot summers.

Darts in a greenhouse, in the south eastern states or some parts of Cali could def work. I'd love to do some in Florida, but a fan and cooling system would also need to be had.

A big dream of mine is winning the lottery and building a large greenhouse addition onto the house. You would enter into a decon room where there would be just a wood bench for sitting or what ever, tile floor with drain and thats it. Then the door leading into the greenhouse. The green house would be similar to a small indoor rainforest with a large water fall that spilled down to a pond area and forming a shallow maybe 2' creek that would wrap around the expanse of the greenhouse. There would be a paverbrick walking path ( I thought about other options but short of a sidewalk this would be the best route to avoid stepping on critters) several benches strategically placed along the path for viewing areas. Micro habitats set up for different species of frogs, maybe even a few humming bird species ( not a fan of bird poop) Even simulated thunderstorms. Lots of epiphytes like large broms and orchids, small tree species and god knows what else. Basically a VERY large mixed tank >.< (ohh noes he said mixed tank!)
