How often should I feed?
#1
Hi again all,
We added our first ever froglets yesterday, 4 D. tinctorius "Cobalt". Fed them after an hour and all 4 eagerly started feeding. Big Grin
My question is, how often should we feed 4 froglets? They ate all the FF up last night but don't seem so eager to eat them all so fast this morning. We were told not to feed too many because after 30 minutes or so the flies are no longer dusted. How many should I feed and how often?

Hi,
Added to what?
Were they quarantined at all?

Rich
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

Hi Rich,

We just built our first vivarium in a Exo Terra Xlarge size. The plants and accessories were added about a month ago and we added the froglets yesterday. No need to quarantine. They came as a group and are the only occupants to this setup.

Hi,
I suggest looking up quarantine procedures. Yes need to quarantine.

There should be enough food for them to feed when they wish, but not enough bugs to be crawling all over the froglets. Being that they are already in viv I woulsd suggest feeding about every other day. Seeding with springtails is also a good idea.

It is important to quarantine all newly acquired frogs for at least 30 days, even if they are already tankmates. This will allow you to observe the frogs to see that they are eating properly, and monitoring their food intake, and output.
This will also allow you to easily isolate any frog(s) if a problem should arise. Also should a problem develope, you will not run the risk of having your newly setup vivarium contaminated.

We usually try to feed our froglets smaller portions more frequently (2x a day).

It's off topic now from my original question but it never occured to me that there was any reason to separate and quarantine these four if we bought them from the same grouping and added them to a frogless tank. I could understand the concern if a froglet was introduced to others that we already had but these four were all living together already. I obviously can't stay away very long and have been watching them all day. I've been able to keep tabs on how they interact, and can easily make sure all four are eating well and acting fine in their new home. I'd be much more concerned if they weren't in the vivarium yet and were all just housed in four bare tanks or shoeboxes for 30 days. Wouldn't it be much safer and less stressful to put them right into the vivarium?

Thanks for your replies.

What happens if your frogs do have a pathogen?
Are you willing to scrap your whole viv?
How did the fecals come back?

If the frogs have a pathogen I will need to discover it and treat it. No, I don't think anyone in this hobby would be willing to scrap an entire vivarium. I did not get fecals due to my obvious ignorance and stupidity.

That being said, I do hope that the tone of your questions is not meant to be as rude and insulting as it appears to me. Since I am the target of the last few questions I am hopefully reading more into the questions than I should.

I am a beginner and I would be the first to admit I have a lot to learn. Obviously, I did not know enough to quarantine and therefore did not do so. Had I known the risks, I probably would have.

We are new to the hobby and hope to learn a lot here. This is only my second post but it should have shown my concern and desire to give my froglets the best care I can. I think, however, that I will be a quiet observer for a while.

Thank you both for the helpful answers to my original question.

hey, don't get spooked: keep asking questions. there are lots of nice and helpful folks here. rich is no miss manners, but he loves the frogs. and he has a valid point. almost all of my frogs have come in with worms or other parasites. it just requires some patience, but the meds available (many from rich's brother, dr. frye, of frye brothers frogs) are effective. if you, like so many people do, stick the frogs into a viv that you are not willing to break down, then the parasite load will likely soar to unacceptable levels as the frogs stand around in their own poop 24/7. in this instance the only option is to treat the frogs (daily/weekly/etc. depending on the problem) forever.

nhbirdsnest,
I just get a bit upset at times when I read how someone new to the hobby has not done research before diving right in.
These are CITES animals and need the very best care possible. You can get fecals done for your group of frogs for $15 .
I answered all of your questions, they just seem to have come a bit late in the game.
If you think that was rude and insulting please don't read any of my other posts as the feeling will most likely not change.

What the hell does that mean ? Getting a fecal done ? You mean to tell me if I pay $40-$100 for a damn frog it will come with worms ?

ive never read anywhere about having to quarentine frogs or get fecals done. Not to say it should not be done, just never seen anywhere ever speak of it and ive read many many artciles and such.

Rich, not to sound cocky but if i were to order frogs from you, would i have to go through all that quarentine and fecal procedure you just recommended?

Probably not. I'm pretty sure he quarantines, tests, and treats all animals in his care. But most will come with a parasite load. Not all froggers are as careful and that's not to say they are careless. Some people disagree with what Rich has to say and some adhere.

Snodog,
You better believe it will come with worms "intact" for no extra charge! Big Grin

Seriously, if you get upset about that, maybe this isn't the hobby for you. There is a lot to deal with when you get into this hobby. It's not super hard to keep the frogs happy, you just have to be somewhat anal when you first start so you make sure you won't have to worry about problems down the road. With that being said, I hope you do stay and get into it. It's amazing how much character a 10 mm frog can have!

One thing to look at with Rich, is that he does produce an awfully large amount of frogs from difficult species. Other breeders do to, but I have never heard a complaint about his frogs, just his writing style! Big Grin

Ok so how then does one go about getting rid of the worms? I am getting my setup ready and want to see how it does first and then in about 2-3 weeks order some frogs. It would be nice to know in advance what to expect. thanks

I know rich advocates setting them up in a temp. container like a rubbermaid with papertowels and perhaps some moss, but make sure it is easy to clean out! Then wait till you can get a fecal sample and send it in and have it tested. I know Dr. Frye did do them, i'm not sure if he still does. THen if it comes back positive with some sort of worm/parasite then he will tell you what he recommends and how to administer the medication. Then after the prescribed time of treatment they can go into their new home!!

Just be sure to throw everything away they come into contact with. Usually people will clean out the tank every week or more?? You may want to ask everyone else what they do.

my frogs all came from big name breeders, and 75% came with parasites. i'll chime in here and add that rich's frogs showed clean on the first set of fecals, and are due for a second round now.

most parasites are fairly easy to get rid of.

So I got my frogs today but no flies. How long can the frogs go without eating ? I have called Black Jungle where I got them from; they were suppose to send flies with frogs and a separate order of culture got the culture but no live flies. Just wondering how long these tiny little frogs can live without food. I live in Maine and have checked everywhere no flies any suggestions ?

Is BJ sending you flies? Do you have the supplements also? How old /large are the frogs? What species? It's not good to let them go long without food if they are young/small.
I'd get a company (maybe BJ since theirs did not survive the trip. They should have a live arrival guarantee...)to overnight a few cultures.

My husband is going to try petco today. Maine is not known for a large assortment of choices in any area. Thanks for the reply. I have the supliments, but no flies they just did not send them not that they did not survive. Thanks Pam
