snails in java moss
#1
I picked up some java moss and I have a clump in a deli container, still in water. I just noticed some snails crawling around. What can I do to get rid of them? If I put the java on the ground will the snails die or can they live on the ground also?

Thanks,
Greg

hi greg,

where did you get this clump of java moss? there are several types too and some can live fully submersed and others cannot. snails love the stuff either way. i have to wonder what else is living in the moss if there are snails already present (if it is wild collected there could be a little bit of everything bad and good in the collection). i don't think the snails would hurt anything, but if they are aquatic snails they may not live if the moss is placed in a strictly terrestrial environment. as for removing them, most people i know with aquatic snails (or snails in general) simply remove them by hand. you don't want to use anything that may put your darts in jeopardy (i'm guessing you have frogs?) i am a gardener and bonsai grower along with a Dart keeper so thats where my opinion and experience is coming from. i hope this helps, i'm sure other people on this forum may know more about this than i do about this.

Yeah I have darts. I got the clump about 2-3 weeks ago from a fish store. I heard it grew quicker in water so that is why I still have it in water. I will be putting it on land soon, but I do not want those snails in it. Maybe I will let it live on land in a different container before putting it in with the frogs. I haven't noticed much growth yet.

If you rinse your aquatic plants in Alum (you can get it at the grocery store spice area). Then rinse then with clear water, it kills snail eggs. Always hand pick a nail as soon as you see babies appear.Check for them everyday.Barb

hey barb,
will alum get rid of any other pests in plants? do you have any other natural remedies? i am trying to prepare plants for my viv, and i want to introduce as few pests (or none) as possible w/o using chemicals. this includes diseases. i know of a few, but i want to know what has worked for others.

ps-barb, here is a pic of my banana tree from last summer. i thought you would like it.

Lauren, You know? You never know that will pop out of my head when you get me on a particular subject . All of a sudden these things come to me.LOL.For air plants you probably know about alochol. I have never tried alum on air plants but it may leave a white film and I don't know if kills anything other than snails.'

I do know that one year in the greenhouse I tried not to use pesticides and I had a mess so I always resort to them if I feel I am loosing the battle. I'm not proud.

Great picture. I just love that. Barb
