I know this is a pretty old topic, but I'm wanting to know how you use gravel to hide the eggcrate. That is what I would like to do. I'm putting an eggcrate/pvc bottom on a 20g long. I will probably only make it 1 1/2 " as the tank already is lacking much height. I assume that you leave a little gap and fill it with gravel. How much of a gap do you leave? Do you use silicone?

I would leave about a half inch gap. Zip tie screen over the sides of the eggcreate you will have to build sides on the structure to do it this way.

Then just fill the gap with loose gravel. I did silcon the end near my pond just to keep it from spilling out.

Thanks! I am going to try that! It looks so much nicer than just covering up the false bottom with black silicone.

Interesting take on covering up the gravel. My girlfriend and I have been discussing ways to do this. We were thinking of a similar scenario but using moss instead.
