Hooked on Dart Frogs - BAD
#1
I seriously decided to set up a dart viv 2 weeks ago and my life has changed so much in the past 2 weeks. The following is my life for the past 2 weeks: I have visited every pet store within 50 miles of my home, I have made 5 trips to Home Depot, my spare bedroom is filled with viv supplies, I check this forum about 50 times a day during work hours, I come home from work, walk and feed the dogs, feed the cats, feed the fish and jump on my laptop and read the forums all evening. I dream about dart frogs, I haven't signed onto World of Warcraft for more than 5 minutes, I finally got my hands on a Wii last Sunday and have a total of 15 minutes play time, if you could track my log time on this forum I would have more time logged here than a normal work week, but what is just plain sad is I just caught myself sitting in the middle of the spare room staring at the tank and supplies and thought...hmm, I am going to take a photo of everything so far and post it....as if anyone would really even care... I have it so bad it is just sick. Please tell me this is a normal newbie phaze I am going through.

I'll trade you a nearly finished Vivarium for your wii.
Actually that is one of the only things I might consider trading it for but,.. and here's the clincher. Only if it came with a dart frog game.

Yeah join the club there is something seductive about these little rain forest gems that just makes one obsessed.

I didn't post pictures because I didn't want people saying "why is that pshyco posting pictures of her supplies. We all have them, what is the big deal." I can promise you plently of photos of set-up and of course many of the cute little guys when they join the viv.

there wouldn't be much point in making a nice setup if it weren't for decoration, and decorations are meant to be looked at. supplies are part of the finished project and although your just looking at the supplies, i'm assuming your also thinking/planning about how they will be used in the tank.

there was often times after i had my viv assembled in my room but still completely empty that i would sit in bed just staring at it imagining about how it might look.

"I have made 5 trips to Home Depot"
just wait till you find yourself going several days week and sometimes several times a day Tongue

I am displaying many of the same behaviors. Problem is, all of my viv supplies are on the dining room table and my wife is giving me dirty looks over it.

I been keeping reptiles and fish for over 15 years and just recently got into darts, now my house has 15 dart tanks set up in nearly 8 months. Besides this I breed crested geckos, and have a 75 gallon with a mixture of 35 + different African chiclids ( Malawi,Victrian, and Tanganyican) whom I also breed. And a 45 Gallon saltwater semi reef tank.

1.1.3 Leucomelas
2.1.0 Auratus Green and Bronze
0.0.4 D. Imitators
0.0.4 D. Lamasi Panguana Green Leg
0.0.4 E. Sanata Isabel
2.1.0 C. Azurieventris
0.0.1 D. Tinc Patricia
0.0.4 D. Ancon Hill
0.0.4 D. Azureus
0.0.6 P. Auerotania
3.5.6 Crested Geckos

Sounds like you could use a weekend getaway---too much going on makes for too much stress. It may diminish the fun of setting up your tank. And sounds like you're searching to satisfy your soul with all this stuff. I find it helpful to just sit and meditate while reading my book of choice, the Bible (mainly the Psalms). It has a soothing effect and takes away some of the insomnia and calms you down. Just my experience, take it or leave it.

It's perfectly normal. I just got in to frogs too and havn't bought the first peice of materials yet but I'm on forums and sites all night and all day and have filled a notebook up with how I want the tank to long and so on and so forth. Just relax a little. Go watch tv or read a book as suggested and not think of frogs for a lil bit then come back to them and wow excitment all over again. Good luck!

Just totally sterilize any plant you get from either home improvement store. They use partially untreated water on their plants.

How's it going with the frog setup? I have live moss if you need any. I did a whole shopping spree as well of supplies, culture supplies, moss I mean everything. And now I have a big mess and no place to put it.

does this mean I won't get better? I haven't gotten my frogs yet, I am building my viv a little at a time.... I'm getting so excited I redid my white's tree frog viv with a false bottom and little waterfall! (they love it, btw). I can't imagine my poor little dog trying to figure out what the noises are in those boxes! lol....
The countdown begins.... My Wedding June 1 ,2009!

I'm glad to hear this is all pretty normal because I've been the same way. I haven't gotten anywhere in the several books I want to read right now because I'm so obsessed with talking and thinking dart frogs all the time. I'm even getting a tattoo of one on my left thigh. I have his outline done and I'm supposed to go get him colored on Thursday. Smile My family and extended family alike are starting to give me wierd looks every time I mention darts but, in order to quiet me down, my Nana has promised to help me with my viv and my mom had volunteered my first two darts for my my twenty-third birthday next month. Smile
your absence has gone through me like thread through a needle; everything I do is stitched with its color.
