Questions on creating viv.
#1
I am basically wanting to get some information on the best way to accomplish the viv that I have in my mind's eye that would house some frogs and other herps. First and formost, what other herps can be kept with PDFs? I would like something a bit more exotic than geckos but am considering geckos. I have a 55 gallon long aquarium that I will be using as my viv. I would like to include some sort of background, live plants, a stream, a pond, a waterfall, a fogger, and fish in the water. I pretty much need help with all of this as I have never built a viv before. Should I be using the screen lid, or is it best to use something else for the lid? Thanks for any help that you guys can offer.

I would ask whoever sells your frogs to you if it would be a good idea to house other animals with the frogs. If you get an tiny 'thumbnail' species, it is likely they could be attacked or eaten by the other reptiles. A lizard like an anole might be an OK choice for a frog this size, but no guarantees that there won't be a skirmish.

ProMist carries a good fogger at a hefty price tag, but it is preferable to the cheaper foggers that can hurt your frogs unless they're isolated within the tank where the frogs can't touch them. BlackJungle (www.blackjungle.com) has a great walkthrough posted in their gallery about how to set up the tank.

And it's best to use an all-glass lid with a very tiny amount of ventilation (don't let the frogs escape!) if you have live plants and frogs who like very humid conditions. Good luck!

You're welcome. Also, be sure to get fecal samples run on your frogs before putting them in the main tank. In the USA, the best way I know to get this done is to send them to Dr. Frye in Michigan. He's experienced with dart frogs and knows what to look for (and a lot cheaper than most vets!) His email is dr.frye.dvm@sbcglobal.net . The cost for one sample is $18, and you will need two to four fecal samples per enclosure/'family' of frogs. It will need to be overnight or 2nd day air mailed to him in order to preserve the viability of the organisms that might be in the feces.

May want to read this about mixing.
Welcome.

Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

If tone is more important to you than content, you are at the wrong place.

You might be able to get away with small day geckos or satanic leaftails, but I would only put them with larger dart frog species, But take my word with a grain of salt I haven't been doing dart frogs that long, but I have been doing geckos for a long time, and leaftails have the same enviornmental requirements

personally, i think its safest not to add.......due to diseases and stress it may cause both species. I think darts belong with darts......fish in a fish tank....and geckos etc....in their own habitat. In my opinion, its better to be safe than sorry. some have other opinions.....but mine remain darts only in vivs. Smile

Most people don't think that mixing is a good idea..Cross breeding is a big no no..In addition to the fact of keeping an whole different animal is dangerous..Not saying that you couldn't pull it off.But to be on the safe side you should read a little bit more about it...In regards to creating your paradise..Look in the construction section you can find lots of great ideas in addition to the info on how to do it...Good luck
