How to introduce another frog into a viv ?
#1
Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I have a single Yellow Banded living in a vivarium that is around 25 gallons. I want to add another frog, the one I have is female. Is there any trouble with just getting another frog and placing him or her in the tank? My frog is currently four years old if that makes any difference.

There is also a Green and Black that I have my eye on. Is this a strict no no? Do I need to get another Yellow and does the sex matter? I've looked into it online, but so many places assume I'll be getting the frogs at the same time, not introducing a new one.

Thanks for any help!

Here's a pic!

standard leucs budWink well introducing a new one should involve a quarantine and better yet a fecal process. i would advise personally on putting the same specis/morph in the viv. just an opinion. kristySmile hope this helps. think i noticed you were from mn.any help neede, just around the cornerWink none of my leucs have had such a prominent backbone(leucomelas) that i have noticed like yours. I'm not quite sure if it is normal or need to feed a bit better. or possibly a didffernet issue??ever had fecals done. the legs however etc do look pretty nice and full. i could be completely mistaken. kristySmile

Ah! Another MN. Giggle. How's the cold treating you?

This picture was taken a few days after I got her and she had lost a little weight after the transition. We've got a little Budda belly now. Although I've always been told that you want to see a bit of the 'hips'.

I've had her more than a year and she's four years old now, active, brave, and lots of fun.

As for sticking to the same colour morph over the Black and Green, is there a reason for that? You said it was just an opinion, but is there a heath reason behind it?

cold. what cold? lol i'm freezing my britches off! its nice to see another minnesotan to be honest! i just helped a fellow frogger the other day with quarantine containers, ff, springtails, and sphagnum and leaf litter. the person was having issues with their darts and had no food. but here to help. i think we should be here for our local froggers in need. black and green auratus i am assuming you are referring to. well if you got the same sex and did a quarantine it could be feasible. not sure as i never tried it with any darts or female leucs for that matter. i usually advise against mixing. why not get some leucs? they usually are good in groups and maybe you can get some babies when you r ready? i would personally go with leucs. yeah a lil hip is ok and normal when they are females. mine tend to get like lil fatties sometimes and lose that hip look a bitWink auratus can b hard to sex by the way. not as easy as leucs and their call! you do have to look at hips, body shape etc. some are barely heard when they call as well. depends. some have a somewhat soft buzz to them. barely heard outside the viv. not a trilling call. i love leuc males. i think you'd enjoy them. leuc males have a loud trilling call than can be appreciated! plus if you want some green and black auratus, you can always order a group as they do well in groups for a new vivWinkwhen you say green and black, talking about panama green and blacks which are very shy in my experience or costa ricans which in my experience tend to be out more. I guess my main recommendation and this is a personal opinion of by all means would b to add another leuc. whether it be male or female. where in mn? if you dont mind. kristySmile

I didn't realize that a different species causes stress. My frog seems so laid back, of course she has no one to fight.

Is hybridizing a no no for the same reason that it's a no no in the parrot world? Do you end up with infertile babies and therefore a waste of genetic energy? Or do the froggers just fear breeding all their species into a single 'mutt' population?

Eeep...I'm not sure I'd ever be ready for tadpoles! Where would I put my growing population? I have no more room for another tank and the tank is really only big enough for two.

Would my female 'do better' with another female or are these guys better on their own if you don't want breeding?

Oh and I'm in St. Paul.

hybrydizing would cause an unnatural hybrid of the dart....meaning you would get a cross that is not like a natural wild type and would only be hurting what we are trying to do in this hobby by keeping the lines "pure" and not letting that happen. It doesnt cause infertile eggs per se, only harms what this hobby is about. we let those hybrids get loose in the hobby, and we may never know what is "pure" and what is a "hybrid". very frowned upon. st.paul, i live in the northwest suburbs. not too far from meWink breeding is fun. you dont need another tank really for breeding. I put my froglets in 190 0z tubs sold at joshsfrogs and grow them up big enough to sell. i wouldnt say your female would "do better" with another female. lol. i'm sure with another male it might be better appreciated lol. she would be fine with another female though. kristySmile

I can understand about not wanting 'mutts' if they are viable. At least in the parrot world when you get a mutt they aren't fertile.

I never thought about selling frogs. But I think it would be great fun to have tadpoles and little froglets.

Where would you suggest I find a Romeo for her?

romeo lol. make sure her name stays juliet.Wink i've got to say josh usually has some, sean stew is great as well. i think pat nabors has some froglets usually??what you dont want to do is buy from the wrong place and have a group of issues with diseases. I have never bought darts from josh. know a couple good private breeders. sean stew has great ones and i'm sure josh as well. didnt you say black jungle??can't remember. never bought from there other than a few supplies. but never had an issue. you could try looking at the vendor feedback section to get a feel of where you'd like to buy. where did you get yours first? you may have to buy a few if you are going to raise from froglets to adults and get a male. the extras can be traded or sold. of course shipping is out of the question until weather warms up a bit, but i could lead you in the right direction for that. you'll just have to do some research. finding adults can be more of a challenge. kristySmile

I wouldn't get any frogs until the weather warms up, waaaaay too cold for that sort of thing. You say these names as if I know who they are. giggle. Do they live here in MN? I take it you don't breed Yellow Bandeds.

You make it sound easy to sell and trade them, do you ever end up with over flow?

oh sorry lol. blonde moment. ok sean is at herpetologic.com or net i belive. josh is at joshsfrogs.com, yes you'll have to wait till a warm spell. no they don't live here in mn. you'll need to pay for shipping. yes, i breed them but cant sex mine out at the moment. they have been kept and i think they may be 6 months ootw and have an extra female. i'll need to wait for some calling before i start pairing them up. have a lot of tincs, but they are yet to be sexed and would need a separate viv as well. pat nabors is at suarian.net. shipping depending on vendor is going to cost anywhere from 40-60+ probably. not many breeders this way, maybe Brian sexton who lives in wi? some vendors will sell for hold at fedex location or ups when temps are 30 and above. i also believe brian at brianstropicsals? sells leucs. leucs really are quite "muddy" as it is i believe. not an expert on morphs by all means. But that doesn't mean you want to go crossing it with anything except a leuc. blackjungle.com i think it is also. that should get you a start. oh i end up with overflow you bet. in that boat as we speak. i just house them in 190 oz containers or large sterilite boxes with some cover( leaf litter, sphagnum moss, pothos plants and film canisters or a cocohut etc and some clips to hold down the sterilite box lids if i go that route). pretty darn simple to just house them in ten gallons as well. the more coverage they have, the more secure they will feel. there are advantages and disadvantages to 190 0z containers and the sterilite bins. where did you get your first? can you try that source? kristySmile

Well if one day down the road (I'm in no hurry) you end up with a male Yellow, let me know! Giggle.

I picked up my little guy at Twin City Reptiles where she had been living for two years.

They don't often order them cause clearly they take too long to sell.

really? you picked the leuc up there? lol. i never knew they sold darts. i may have some males. i just checked and a few look male and a few are very fat and looking female, but time will tell. its too soon now. hey, did i catch your name bud? kristySmile

Like I said they almost never have them. They have a Black and Green Aur. right now...which is the only reason I was thinking about it.

My name is Lauren by the way.

Do you have some pics of your set ups? I'd love to see your froggies!

By the way, would a lone frog ever lay infertile eggs? I've never had any eggs, but at the same time I've never heard a peep either, and TCR never heard any peeps after the other one was sold (they had two the other must have been male).

If you still have your yellow bandeds once you know the sex I'd love to have a male. How much are yer babies?

I've got pics of my set up in the Set Up forum.

Wow! I LOVE the wall! that's just great. Very hardcore. Giggle.

I would need an adult frog anyway to keep my big girl from eating him!

I'm about to start a new 'aqua vivarium'. Here's the glass: http://exo-terra.com/en/products/turtle_terrarium.php

No frogs in this one though, just a butt load of aquatic plants, driftwood, semi aquatics and some expensive little fish and shrimps. It will be like a mangrove.
